FREE FIRE: Ben Wheatley's Next Is Underway, See Who Rounds Out The Cast
Filming began on Ben Wheatley's new film Free Fire yesterday and Deadline has an update on the cast.

The film is already bolstered by a really good cast to start; Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Wheatley alumnus Michael Smiley, Enzo Cilenti (who was also just in Wheatley's High Rise) and Babou Ceesay ('71).

Joining them will be young lads Jack Reynor and Sam Riley. ScreenAnarchy fave Noah Taylor (Edge of Tomorrow) rounds up the additions.

Set in Boston in the late 1970's, [the film] follows a woman (Larson), who has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy and Smiley) and a gang (led by Hammer and Copley) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart-stopping game of survival ensues.

Martin Scorsese is executive producing the film. Wheatley wrote the film with regular collaborator Amy Jump (Kill List, A Field in England, Sightseers and High Rise)

Is there anything Wheatley can't do? I don't know about everyone else, but I can't wait to see what he does with this. Especially with that cast (Murphy and Smiley on the same team? YES.).

Wheatley is obviously one of the ( very few) big new guns out there. I really hope his J.G. Ballard adaption of High Rise is as good as one could imagine from his trajectory. If he continues to deliver, and his output is already amazing, Wheatley is going to be a huge name in just a few years. I hope his ambitions are just as big.

I'm already seeing trailers for movies coming out in November. It would be nice to see an official release date for High-Rise.

To my knowledge High Rise doesn't have a US distributor yet. No distributor = no release date = no marketing campaign. My guess is there won't be any video released at all until just prior to wherever it has its world premiere (likely Toronto or Venice), where they will release a clip or two, but no trailer until it's timed to push a theatrical release.

You're probably right. But that vague '2015' date is hanging out there. If Only Lovers Left Alive is the distribution model this is following, it'll get a slow nationwide release after all the independent film festivals. Bugger - I want it now! 8^)
