The Many Faces Of David Thewlis

This week, Brian Helgeland's film Legend goes wide in North America, and the film stars Tom Hardy as the identical Cray twins. But there are more stellar actors in that cast, one of them being David Thewlis. And he is the focus of this quiz.

The one thing noticeable with David Thewlis is that he looks, well, unnoticeable. A regular British bloke as you happen to meet, once there. But he uses his common looks as a powerful way to establish believable characters, no matter how weird or fantastic the film he is in. When he is angry you feel it, when he uses caustic wit it hurts, yet when he's the good guy you identify with him.

Therefore, once again I'm going to use eleven pictures of one of my favourite thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images, and guess which movies they're from. No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get without using IMDb!

And I'll post the answers next Thursday, or earlier if someone gets all of them right...

Zach Gayne contributed to this story.

And here he is as Leslie Payne in Legend.

This picture doesn't count yet for the quiz, but all others do, so please browse through the gallery: click on the edge of the picture to get the next one, and see how many of them all you can identify!

#02 - Naked

#04 - Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
#05 - Seven Years in Tibet

#07 - Dragonheart
#08 - Harry Potter (obvsly). But which one, Half-Blood Prince?
#09 - The Big Lebowski

#10 - Anomalisa

FlyteBroDecember 11, 2015 12:18 PM

I never noticed that angelic halo on the wall behind his head in Naked before. Is that to indicate that he is some sort of holy figure, akin to the similar image in Hawaii Oslo:

If so, it puts a whole new spin to the film that I never even considered before.

Thewlis in NAKED is the HOLY FOOL. One of my favorite films of all time.

6 - Island of Dr. Moreau
3 - Life is sweet

And no "Besieged"? I think that's where I saw him for the first time.

Ard VijnDecember 11, 2015 4:21 PM

All correct, except 8, which is Half-Wrong. And I think you have 10 and 11 mixed up, but I'll give you ANOMALISA as #11.
That leaves 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10!

Ard VijnDecember 11, 2015 4:24 PM

Both correct! And yes, I should have added BESIEGED.
That leaves 1, 8 and 10...

UilickMcGeeDecember 11, 2015 4:45 PM

Is #3 Naked?
Favourite Thewlis movie to date...

vesDecember 11, 2015 5:04 PM

:)
10 is the new Macbeth - thought that was answered already. Was good to see him in the movie!

I quite like him as an actor, so I was pleasantly surprised with this quiz :)

Ard VijnDecember 11, 2015 6:00 PM

It is!
That just leaves 1 and 8...

Ard VijnDecember 11, 2015 6:00 PM

Number 2 (the picture with the halo) is...

MhorDecember 13, 2015 3:03 AM

That's #3 on mine. If you count The Legend picture as #1

MhorDecember 13, 2015 3:06 AM

#1 comes up as the Legend picture for me. Making #2 Queen and Country - which I think is the #1 you are looking for?

MhorDecember 13, 2015 3:10 AM

and #8 you mean the Harry Potter one? That is definitely Prisoner of Azkaban, when we first meet Remus. I love Remus Lupin - my favourite character in the books and he played him brilliantly!

FlyteBroDecember 13, 2015 4:27 AM

Indeed, I love that movie too. One of the movies I've seen the most times.

Ard VijnDecember 13, 2015 11:11 AM

Correct!

Ard VijnDecember 13, 2015 11:12 AM

And correct as well!

Ard VijnDecember 13, 2015 11:19 AM
