The Many Faces Of Domhnall Gleeson
Alex Garland's Ex Machina is currently doing great business: still in a successful theatrical run in its home country of the United Kingdom, the limited release in the US so far has seen a staggeringly high box office (60,000 dollars for each screen in its opening weekend!), causing the distributor to consider a wide expansion for it in the coming weeks. On top of that Ex Machina is picking up awards at festivals, and the gender politics shown in the film are widely discussed. Shelagh Rowan-Legg likes the film somewhat but is disappointed by it, as she explains in her review. Indeed, the film doesn't shy away from the murky waters of misogyny and sexploitation.
The moral high ground in the film is mostly provided by Caleb, as played by Domhnall Gleeson, so this is a splendid opportunity to make him the subject of this week's quiz, same as we did with his father Brendan last year...
For Domhnall Gleeson has an uncanny talent of providing heartfelt performances in even the most perfunctory of roles. On top of that, if you look at his resumeƩ of the past five years, you'll notice he has managed to be in a big amount of excellent indies and blockbusters, with the odd controversially talked-about title in between. Impressive! Not surprisingly, he is also in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens...
So once again I'm going to use eight close-ups of one of my favourite thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images and guess which eight movies (or shows) they're from. No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get without using IMDb!
And I'll post the answers next Thursday (or earlier if someone gets all eight of them right).
