[Update: New Footage!] Shah Rukh Khan's RA.ONE Website Opens With Tons Of Goodies!
Shah Rukh Khan's big budget superhero film, Ra.One, is two months away from hitting around 3,000 screens worldwide on Diwali (October 26th), so it must be time to start the promotional blitz!
Ra.One's production company is SRK's own Red Chillies Entertainment, with support from Eros Entertainment, one of India's biggest production houses, who are also behind Rajnikanth's upcoming Rana. Since it is largely SRK's money on the line, he is seeing to it that this film's larger-than-any-Indian-film-ever budget isn't a huge mistake. For the first time ever, an Indian film is coming out with a huge amount of merchandising and pre-release swag. This is something that is old hat in the West, but is still not done in India.
Ra.One opened its expanded website over the weekend with tons of info on the film, its characters, and a store for merchandise. Among the merch are a couple of pretty cool action figures, including the signed limited edition figure you see in the top corner that will set you back about $260! There is also an articulated figure, the H.A.R.T. module shown below, and a frisbee. They also have a special section just for Ra.One school supplies, pencil boxes and such. This is revolutionary for Indian films, perhaps not terribly high-minded, but revolutionary nonetheless. My wife is already threatening to buy everything on the site for my son, so it must be working.
In addition to the stuff for sale, the producers also released the first looks at many of the main characters. The images below show Shekar Subramanium (Shah Rukh Khan), Sonia Subramanium (Kareena Kapoor), and their son Prateek Subramanium AKA Lucifer. Their bios are all detailed on the extensive Ra.One film site, which also houses the trailers we've posted here and some new images. Also included is a neat interactive feature called G.One deconstructed, in which you can dissect the G.One superhero character and his suit to learn about it's special powers. This is all in preparation for the film and it's associated Playstation Network game coming next month.
Yup, Ra.One: The Game. While this isn't the first Indian film to get a video game, Ghajini beat them to the punch three years ago, it is certainly a better looking game and a far more kid friendly subject than that one. I believe it is only going to be available on PSN in India, which is a shame, but what would you expect.
Last, but not least, there are new videos. The first one is a fifteen second teaser from the new song Chhamak Challo, sung by Western star, Akon for the film. The last two are videos of SRK talking about his new toys. All pretty entertaining. Check them out!
