Four Shots From Yorgos Lanthimos' ALPS

When Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos broke through on to the international film scene with 2009's Dogtooth I doubt even the most fervent early admirers could have predicted the impact the film would have. A controversial and edgy favorite on the international festival circuit Dogtooth would go on - surprisingly, given the content of the film - to garner an Oscar nomination as Best Foreign Language Film and while it didn't win the nomination certainly planted Lanthimos in peoples' minds as a significant director to watch. The question now is can he repeat that success?

His next effort, Alps, is certainly off to a good start, already selected at both the Toronto and Venice film festivals. Here's how Venice describes it:

A Nurse, a Paramedic, a Gymnast and her Coach have formed a service for hire. They stand in for dead people by appointment, hired by the relatives, friends, or colleagues of the deceased. The company is called Alps while their leader, the Paramedic, calls himself Mont Blanc. Although the Alps members operate under a discipline regime demanded by their leader, the Nurse doesn't...
Clearly anybody concerned that the success of Dogtooth might have led Lanthimos to play things a later bit safer can rest assured that this isn't the case. Check a quartet of stills from the film below.
