As Marvel mines the depths of their character catalog for big screen properties one thing has become clear: They are rapidly coming to the end of the big, mainstream characters and, if they are to continue, things are going to get weird. Hardcore fans of the label have been waiting for the weird factor to crank up and recent Marvel entries have nodded to the supernatural, cosmic side of the Marvel Universe with elements of both Thor and Captain America leaning in that direction. But for all that Thor is a god and Captain America showed off the Cosmic Cube that's still not the real thing. If you want Cosmic Marvel you want Doctor Strange.

Created in 1963 Doctor Strange is the story of an arrogant surgeon who is injured in a car accident and goes on to become the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel universe. Using his magical powers Strange protects the earth from attacks from other realms.

Fans have been vocal about wanting a Doctor Strange movie for a while now and there have been rumblings that Marvel was listening, most recently a June, 2010 report that Marvel had hired Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to draft a script. When Marvel hired the Donnelly / Oppenheimer duo they were significantly hotter properties than they are right now, the duo having just been hired to draft the Conan reboot and having turned in a draft of Cowboys And Aliens. With Cowboys not faring so well at the box office and anticipation for Conan sputtering badly the pair may be taking a bit of a hit these days but when Marvel hired them they were hot properties and the signing meant that Marvel was taking Doctor Strange seriously. And they still are.

Twitch has learned that Oppenheimer and Donnelly have now turned in their script and Marvel is pushing forward with the property. Marvel has drafted a short list of directors to approach on the title and is forwarding the current script to each to try and sign someone up to 'oversee continued development'.

You can read that 'continued development' comment a couple ways. Either Marvel is basically happy with the draft that they have now but want to give the eventual director a chance to make their mark on it before considering things locked down or they are looking for a director who can also re-tool the script from the ground up. Either way, though, this is a sign that Marvel is committed to the character and are looking at Doctor Strange as a 2013 release. With word out now that Edgar Wright has also turned in his script for Ant-Man the superhero world is about to get a bit weirder.

So, what do you think? If they're going to make a Doctor Strange movie, who should be the Doctor? And if you're Marvel, who's on your short list to direct?

JoeAugust 1, 2011 2:50 PM

After Cap, Dr. Strange is my #2 -- BRING IT! !!

krakarAugust 1, 2011 4:59 PM

Hope its got a much better script than Cowboys&Aliens. Needs some crazy vision like Tarsem or Kounen,or Vaughn or Wright.

docwatson.21August 1, 2011 6:26 PM

Maybe since the Avenger Initiative has been so successful, they're going to try the same thing with The Defenders???

DagobahAugust 1, 2011 11:01 PM

This is a bit out in left field, but Jason Isaacs from Brotherhood/Harry Potter would be a pretty awesome Doc Strange I think....

AABAugust 2, 2011 1:01 PM

Johnny DEPP will play Stephen Strange / DR. STRANGE.

anfmethodjorAugust 3, 2011 12:18 AM

Now that's why this character will be on UMvC3.

I hope they make Black Panther movie sometime. Ideally by Christopher Nolan since T'challa is sometimes considered Marvel's Batman, in a way that Hawkeye is similar to Green Arrow, superficially speaking.

HollyAugust 13, 2011 4:36 AM

I would love Benedict Cumberbatch to be Dr Strange. He is a superb actor with a growing fanbase. He's new to this genre and that would be a breath of fresh air.I'm sick of the same faces.

JoeAugust 26, 2011 7:39 PM

This is gonna sound weird, but I think Tom Hanks could be a great Dr. Stephen Strange.

sonny89104August 26, 2011 8:57 PM

@Joe - After some thought I gotta agree with you.

I'm not a huge fan of Jonny Depp, but think he would make a good Doctor Strange given the right director.

The director should be David Lynch. Doctor Strange was my favourite superhero when I used to read marvel comics as a teenager.

A movie on Doctor Strange would need to be something very special, keeping with the comic book character but not just relying on cgi effects (which is going to be essential).

This would be a good opportunity for someone like Lynch to use his magic and experience to make a ground breaking movie.

To create an atmosphere that makes the audience feel uneasy and strange whenever Doctor Strange opens a portal into the purple veil or other dimension.

Given films like Eraserhead, Dune, Blue Velvet, David Lynch could make this more than just another Marvel Comic movie.

Oh, lord ... A David Lynch Doctor Strange would absolutely BLEED money and might just end up being one of the most spectacular failures ever but I'd LOVE to see it ...

I am Marvel, I would choose Guillermo del Toro, director of Pan's Labyrinth, to direct Dr Strange movie because he can infuse the aesthetic elements of magic and fantasy into Dr Strange's magical world lke what he did to Hell Boy 2.

Jon Hamm would make a very interesting Doctor Strange. I wonder if he would be interested...

thomasestevensjrMay 14, 2012 10:22 PM

Jon Hamm would be a good serious Dr. Strange. He could easily play the arrogant young physician and then he has the emotional chops to show the decline of this character after his car accident.
I think he would be perfect.
On another note...I'm hearing rumors of a Fantastic Four reboot. If so...and the reboot involves a return of Galactus...I can think of no other actor athis time who could play the "Devourer of Worlds" than someone who right now is very controversial in Hollywood...and everywell else for that matter...Mel Gibson.
And a question to everyone out there...why is it taking so long to make a Black Panther film. He is one of the best Marvell Characters with Michael Jai White as T'Challa.

And another thing....
there are talks of an Inhumans film. The Inhumans originally appeared in the Fantastic Four. However they really shined in the Avenger's in the "Kree/Skrull War" and in the following Amazing Adventures series where they escaped from that conflict and ended up in LA. with Black Bolt suffering from amnesia and his friends trying to find him.
The stories are set in the 70's with a lot of social unrest. To update it would be simple setting the vocal social activist on a May 1st rally and having anarchists in the crowd.
After dealing with the Kree/Skrull conflict the attention of tensions involving current economic tensions with the populace the Avengers decide to oversee and violent outbreaks of Anarchists.
Thor is sent to LA where Black Bolt is separated from his friends and is befriended by a young boy who is avading an abusive father and wife beater.

Sal Buscema, "Big" John Buscema and Neal Adams did the art in this series and it was fantastic to anyone who remembers.

Just my thoughts...

Last shout!
If the Silver Surfer is to return..the last Fantastic Four movie hit it right on with the voice of Lawrence Fishburne and the body of Doug Jones.

Also the casting was if a reboot does happen...lets keep the same cast...!
ps: who plays the Watcher?

thomasestevensjrMay 15, 2012 12:29 AM

Jim Carrey and Christoper Loyd as Skrulls.
Cillian Murphy as Maximus the Mad(brother of Black Bolt)

Don Johnson aka The Rock as Ronan the Accuser
Billy Campbell as Captain Mar-vell
James Earl Jones as the voice of the Supreme Intelligence
Lawrence Fishburne(as the voice) and Doug Jones as The Silver Surfer

I know...I know...I must be high...but whatever...

thomasestevensjrMay 15, 2012 12:46 AM

Sorry...ment Dwayne Johnson...not thinking!!!!

thomasestevensjrMay 15, 2012 1:06 AM

I think Jonny Depp is the best...but in order to play the good doctor it has to be completely serious and straight. The character of dr. strange knows more about whats going on than anyone and whenhe shows up it's not tongue in's serious. So I think that Jon Hamm is the guy.
The Lionsgate Animated did a great origin story and I believe it should be used as a template for the film.
However Clea should be introduced halfway thru the story as a novice while Strange is going thru his training...the actress?
Lets hear some feedback....!
Also....and I hate to say it(but love it at the same time) is that the film should start out as a horror film...scaring the be-jeezus out of the audience....
Here is my scenario---
An exorcism taking place in Butte, Montana...middle of winter...1988..Catholic priests have been called in...the local minister can't cope...3 priests go in...a child...10 yrs old...girl...
(terrible indescribable things happen) one priest comes out...beaten and broken...saying "give me the phone" but before he can dial Dr. Strange arrives and says"where is it?"
this will be the scariest part of the film.
After the exorcism....the title start....then "20 years earlier...1968"
Once we go thru the origin story it goest to present day...2012

thomasestevensjrMay 15, 2012 1:21 AM

The actress to my estimation is......
Rosalyn Sanchez...with white hair...!
