Tintin was an iconic figure of my youth and his Cold War-infused tales of treasure, spies, missing scientists and journeys to far off and mysterious lands captured my imagination in a way only James Bond or Indiana Jones could rival. So the prospect of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson collaborating on a big screen adaptation was music to my ears. Star power in the form of Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost only added to my enthusiasm, but the caveat to my otherwise untempered excitement has been the decision to realise the project as a performance capture animation. While at times it works, human characters have failed to convince me so far. And so we come to the first teaser trailer for THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. Yes, it looks epic, exciting, fast-paced and an entertaining realisation of the period and the mood of Herge's comic books, but those characters still don't look quite right to me. See for yourselves below.
