The Many Faces Of Geoffrey Lewis
Earlier this week, veteran actor Geoffrey Lewis died at 79 years of age. Many of the trades ran obituaries on him, some of them including a picture of him with his daughter Juliette Lewis.
Upon seeing that picture, three things went through my mind, in this order:
Number one: Ah, HIM!
Number two: Wow, he is Juliette's father?
Number three: What a shame he's gone!
Geoffrey Lewis had a very remarkable face, with his manic eyes above his often drooping jowls, and it made him very noticeable as a character actor. If you watched television or cinema a lot in the seventies and eighties, there seriously was no avoiding this guy. Western? He was bound to be in it. A-team villain of the week? Rest assured he'd pop up at some point. Italian genre pic? Dammit, him again! Clint Eastwood film, either acting or directing? Him! HIM! Dick Miller looks regular enough to get away with it, but Geoffrey Lewis? He's the ultimate "HIM!" actor.
Thing is, though overexposure of his unique face used to cause almost as much of a distraction as the Wilhelm Scream does, once he was given something to do he always did it well, as he was a damn fine actor in his own right. Be it a stumbling sidekick or menacing opponent, he always delivered.
Therefore, once again I'm going to use a gallery of close-ups of one of my favorite (and most-spotted) thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images and guess which movies or shows they're from! No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get without using IMDb.
And I'll post the answers next Thursday (earlier if someone has all eleven of them right).
