It would appear that the force is set to awaken in Indonesia.

Though there has been no comment whatsoever from any of the performers or their representation, ScreenAnarchy has learned that a key trio of performers from Gareth Evans' The Raid and The Raid 2 - leading man Iko Uwais, Mad Dog / Prakoso actor Yayan Ruhian and The Raid 2 finale fighter Cecep Arif Rahman, credited simply as The Assassin - will all appear in JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens.

We have no word yet on what their characters may be, which side of the good guy / bad guy line they fall upon or whether any will survive through until the subsequent pictures but think on this: After the underwhelming prequel trilogy with its massive over-reliance on CGI trickery not only has Abrams shown a strong preference for practical effects but has now also cast a trio of highly skilled martial artists who have already demonstrated their skills with blades, batons, etc in a world where super powered warriors fight with blades, batons, etc.

Yes, please?

More about Star Wars: Episode VII

Around the Internet

SebaZavaJanuary 5, 2015 12:18 PM

Awesome news!

Although considering all the lightsaber fights in the prequels involved real-life stunts and stunt performers and choreography (especially the Darth Maul duel and the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin), I don't think that last comment is warranted :/

arthur langJanuary 5, 2015 12:29 PM

This is great news, best movie news i've read this year. As i was watching The Raid 2 for the 4th time i said to myself it would be great if they had a role in one of the Star Wars film, low and behold it's gonna happen..I'm happy...

ScorptilicusJanuary 5, 2015 12:53 PM

Seeing as one of the few new elements the prequels introduced that most fans actually liked was a badass character portrayed by a martial artist (Darth Maul), this is certainly something to be optimistic about.

So I imagine 1. they already shot their scenes during initial production or 2. they will film more scenes during reshoots. ?

Anugrah Firdaus Muh.January 5, 2015 2:02 PM

Wow. Really excited for these guys. I think Iko Uwais was a cable repairman before Merantau, and now he's in freakin' Star Wars.

JJ Abrams has managed to step up the action. Can't wait to see it.

KunderempJanuary 6, 2015 5:17 AM

A little bit correction. Iko Uwais was a truck driver for a local telecommunication company.

Joshua P SiadariJanuary 6, 2015 10:51 AM

oh my GOD i can't believe it

Andrew MackJanuary 6, 2015 6:01 PM Someone's made a link between an anti-Jedi martial art mentioned in some of the SWU novels and Silat.

Marjorie2January 6, 2015 7:39 PM

Agreed, this is fantastic news. I love The Raid films, and Iko and Yayan
performed and choreographed my favorite martial arts fight scene ever
at the end of The Raid. All three actors would make great Jedi or Sith.
This, along with Andy Serkis, is dream casting for Star Wars.

General BisonJanuary 7, 2015 8:59 AM

Teras Kasi?

Syaiful Maulana AbbidinJanuary 7, 2015 11:32 AM

WOW.. it will be more "GREGET" with pencak silat
Can't wait..

Anugrah Firdaus Muh.January 7, 2015 8:28 PM

yeayy that's great , thanks sir for you information. really getting exciting about force awaken !

MoersJanuary 8, 2015 9:06 PM

Yup .. created by Steve Perry based on his knowledge as a Pentjak Silat Serak practitioner. More info:

AckAckAckJanuary 8, 2015 9:22 PM

As an Indonesian and used to train Silat as well, this is something to be proud of. Glad that the trio got the recognition. They deserve that. Also Mad Dog is actually a pretty nice guy IRL.

AckAckAckJanuary 8, 2015 9:34 PM

Is this the new rewritten universe or Disney decided to keep several Expanded Materials? I heard Disney want to drop the expanded universe but probably not entirely.

Also Anti-Jedi, are they Sith or new faction altogether? Probably a group who dislike Jedi and Sith interference in running the galaxy.

Wee DheeJanuary 9, 2015 8:26 AM

May the Force be "Greget"

Andrew MackJanuary 9, 2015 11:30 AM

Can't say I know which SWU this is from. The article notes the novels where it is mentioned. Don't know if it is a faction or Sith. Apparently Darth Maul was a practitioner of it - says the article - which didn't help him in Phantom Menace. But I think the novels came out after the 'split decision'.

AckAckAckJanuary 9, 2015 8:48 PM

Oh okay thanks. I think I will stop speculating and let JJ Abram surprise me.

Santanu MuliawidiJanuary 20, 2015 12:08 AM

Hi Todd. Would you mind to explain us, cause it is become confusing now.
Idk about how to produce a movie. But, fact is, Star Wars Episode 7's principal photography had already done last year. They start shooting since May 2014 and wrap it at November 2014.
Then, yesterday, i read a news, Cecep Arif Rahman said that he wait confirmation about it. He just been told to be ready and prepare. (????)
It means.... already shot, but without the raid 2 trio?

Todd BrownJanuary 20, 2015 12:25 AM

Everybody involved in the Satr Wars films in any way has had to sign non-disclosure agreements. They can't say anything that would either confirm or deny anything. But this is real and has already been shot.

Santanu MuliawidiJanuary 20, 2015 1:25 AM

Wow... what a business...
