DELHI BELLY Trailer Proves India Knows Toilet Humor
Bollywood's most notorious perfectionist is at it again.  Aamir Khan, along with his wife Kiran Rao (director of Dhobi Ghat), and UTV head Ronnie Screwvala are beginning the major promotional push for their new film, Delhi Belly.  The film stars Aamir's nephew Imran Khan alongside actor/comedian Vir Das (Badmaash Company) among others.  Aamir Khan's previous productions have gone pretty well: Lagaan was nominated for an Oscar back in 2001, and both Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Peepli Live (2010) were India's official submissions to AMPAS for Oscar consideration, while the Imran Khan starrer Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and 2011's Dhobi Ghat were also very solid films. Dhobi Ghat has a chance at landing India's submission for this year as well. On a personal note, all of these films have been really good, and even if Aamir Khan's choices for his acting roles can be suspect at times, his production track record is very solid.

Khan is not known for producing sub-par films, and this first foray into adult comedy for his AK Productions imprint marks a departure for him and the company away from a declared family-friendly mission, and more toward an adult, and perhaps broader international audience. In this case, though, more adult doesn't necessarily mean more mature, it mostly means dirtier and with more swearing, which is certainly a step in a new direction, at least for a film with such big names attached.

Here's the synopsis via the official Facebook page:
Tashi, Arun and Nitin - flatmates, buddies and partners in crime. Tashi is to get married in a month but still doesn't know if his fiancé is THE ONE! Arun can't make up his mind who he wants to kill first - his girlfriend who has just dumped him or his stupid, annoying boss whose idea of creativity is sketching a smiling banana! And Nitin is about to discover that eating delicious tandoori chicken off a street vendor is going to give him the worst case of Delhi Belly he's ever known! Three regular blokes, living the regular life EXCEPT for one small detail - they are on the hit list of one of the world's deadliest crime syndicates. Will they be able to get away before the shit hits the roof and it comes crashing down? Delhi Belly - the meanest comedy you're ever likely to see.
To be honest, I've been scanning the news on this title for quite a while trying to determine its ScreenAnarchy-worthiness, but it was this trailer that made me take that leap.  It looks like it could be genuinely funny.  As a quick warning, there is a significant amount of unsubtitled Hindi in the trailer as well as some foul language, but I still thought it showed promise.

Delhi Belly is scheduled for release on July 1st, which, unfortunately for me, puts it up against Amitabh Bachchan's Bhuddah - Hoga Tera Baap.  Not sure which I'll go for opening night.  Unfortunately with Bollywood films averaging around three hours, double features are a bit of a beating, but I digress...
