Hmmm, this is interesting. Screendaily is reporting that Gold Circle have bought remake rights for Johnnie To's Breaking News. I actually kind of like the idea of this one ... To's critique of media saturation is every bit as applicable here as it is in Hong Kong and there's plenty of room to build on and improve the original. But the big question is this: will it still have the lengthy, multi-level, shot-in-a-single-take gun battle? I thought the film stumbled a good bit after that but that opening sequence ... yum ...

Also tucked into the Screen article as a bit of an afterthought is that To is also now prepping a sequel to The Mission which will be titled Exiled. Assuming he actually finishes all his announced projects that means 2006 should be a three film year for To fans - four if you're waiting on the Hong Kong DVD of Election - with this, the sequel to Election and The Sparrow all due.

Thanks to Jiangtou for the pointer.
