SHIN GODZILLA Stampedes Into US Theaters This October
Toho Studios’ 29th big screen outing for their favourite atomic kaiju, Shin Godzilla (aka Godzilla Resurgence), makes its way to US shores for a limited theatrical engagement this October, courtesy of the good people at Funimation.
Shin Godzilla - which is a fun play on words that can be translated as either “Real” Godzilla or “New” Godzilla - will be playing on US cinema screens ONLY from October 11 - 18, so those wanting the full sensory experience should start scouring local listings now for their nearest screening.
Co-directed by anime veteran Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Attack on Titan helmsman Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla is both a loving homage to the classic 1954 film from Ishiro Honda, yet also a darkly satirical skewering of contemporary Japanese politics - specifically in the wake of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Starring Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara and a host of cameos from the likes of Shinya Tsukamoto and Jun Kunimura, the film reboots the property, kicking off when underwater disturbances in Yokohama Bay trigger the arrival of a massive, unidentifiable creature. As politicians tie themselves up in bureaucratic redtape, it is left to low level civil servant Yaguchi (Hasegawa) to handle the crisis, with the help of a Japanese-born American envoy (Ishihara).
