I am not A Serial Killer. Almost killed it.
Yesterday, i had the chance to see "I am not a serial killer". And there was a lot here to enjoy. There was the overall mood of the picture which had a brooding tension and also something strangely relaxing (in a good way). The stort is set in a quiet small town, where not much has happened until now. Also the timing of the story is strangely alienating. It could play in the eighties, however there are mobile phones at hand, so this also could be happening right now. It is as if modern times only seeped through with certain elements. That only increases the strangeness and the sense of confusion. I am not so keen on spoilers and such and i will not give away much of the plot. But there is a killer in this town, and John Wayne Cleaver, a not to popular high school kid with a taste for the morbid, is in the middle of it. Needless to say that some clues and some persons in town are pointing to John. This is all displayed in a very casual and natural way.
Then there are the characters in the story, and this was a great treat for me. Because there were a couple of them, who could go either way. During the movie, i really had no idea if certain people were really bad, were just crazy or how they would end up. But with a great written part, you also must have the performers to pull it off. And they do not disappoint, performances are great all over the board (or over the town), and especially Max Records and Christopher Lloyd stand out.
And this movies creates its own likeable and menacing atmosphere. Lately people like to compare new movies with movies which predates this particular movie. Like element a comes from movie b, and this element is from movie b... . Sure there always things or elements that also will be present in other movies, but that is almost unavoidable nowadays. Usually is it the combination of certain elements and a new stale or flavour that makes a certain movie unique. And that is certainly the case here. The setting, mood and characters are familiar but it is done with a new and a refreshing energy.
Now we come up with the 1 thing i did not like in this. So do not read further than this if you are going to see this. Skip to the next paragraph.**** Spoiler alert*** . Why dit they come up with the unnecessary and clumsy cgi at the end of the movie. There was no need to show the creature/being in its entirety. The whole movie was about who or what was doing the killing, not what it would look like. Leave something to the imagination of the viewer, this is really a case of the lesser you see, the better .. ****Spoiler Ended**
So except from what i mentioned just now(see spoiler), this really was an original, refreshing and thrilling picture.
Now you go and seek it out and please tell me what you think.
Thanks and have a good watch,
John Daam
