The Many Faces Of Halloween

Today, instead of our regular thespian-of-the-week screenshots quiz, we are going to do something different. Today it is Halloween! First we thought about doing a Michael Myers gallery, like we did with Jason on a Friday the 13th, but... let's face it: Mike isn't as pretty, and there are only so many William Shatner masks you can handle.

Therefore, we will feature a grand number of 26 directors of horror films (because 26 = 2 x 13 and it is Halloween), and we challenge you to identify as many of them as possible! Some will be famous, some will be less famous, some will have done horror exclusively, others may have dabbled a single time, though successfully enough to be remembered for it. Some are prolific, some we wish to be more prolific, and of some we wish they could be more prolific.

What this gallery won't be is comprehensive. Not everyone we like or love will be in it. Remember, it's a quiz, and if your favorite (or you yourself) isn't in it, no slight is intended.

So flick through the images, and see if you recognize who all these people are. No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get!

And I'll reveal the answers next Thursday (with added mini-bios for all, like John Carpenter has below), or earlier if someone gets all of them right.

Michele "Izzy" Galgana, J Hurtado, Shelagh Rowan-Legg and contributed to this story.

And this is John Carpenter. This being Halloween, he had to be our figurehead for this quiz. Few people can boast on having made such a great contribution to genre films as him, scoring many classics in the dozen of years between 1976 and 1988. In that list are films as The Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, John Carpenter's The Thing, Escape From New York, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China... and of course the seminal slasher Halloween.

(Ok, so three of those titles are probably not horror, according to many. Sue me...)

This picture doesn't count yet for the quiz as I've given the answer already, but all others do, so please browse through the gallery: click on the edge of the picture to get the next one, and see how many of them all you can identify!

There're a few faces on there that are so familiar. Killing me.

sailor monsoonNovember 1, 2015 5:42 AM

One is William friedkin.
There's about 4 others that are also killing me

Ard VijnNovember 1, 2015 7:30 AM

Numbers people! I'll allow it for now because these are all obviously correct and in the right order, but I want to avoid these quizzes to turn into a miscellaneous yelling of names sort-of thing.

Anyway, these are all correct, so numbers 2, 5, 6, 7, 9 (a + b), 11, 13, 14 (a + b), 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 25 and 26 have now been claimed!

Ard VijnNovember 1, 2015 7:33 AM

Numbers, people! But yes, correct, he's number 4.
That leaves 1, 3, 8, 10, 12, 17, 21, 22, 23 and 24!

ManateeAdvocateNovember 1, 2015 10:36 AM

I don't know who number 1 is but she's a certifiable beauty in my realm. Stunning.

#24 looks an awful lot like Traci Lords, but I'm not aware of if she's directed anything, let alone a horror film. Can't be her though.

Unflinching_EyeNovember 1, 2015 1:36 PM

Oops and thanks! :)

Ard VijnNovember 1, 2015 7:27 PM

You are definitely right about #1.
And I personally know #24 and now I can't stop laughing.

ManateeAdvocateNovember 1, 2015 7:41 PM

Shit. I meant no offense. Lords was EXCELLENT in Excision.

Ard VijnNovember 1, 2015 7:54 PM

Don't worry: no offence was taken! (or so I've heard)

SebaliciousNovember 1, 2015 11:30 PM

Damn...I could have sworn #4 was Larry Cohen... Anyway... #1 is Gigi Saul Guerrero (I know her as actress not as director so I'll admit I had to look her up on IMDB before answering just to make sure) and #17 is Jennifer "Boxing Helena" Lynch or course! The fact that Gigi has mostly directed shorts is a bit misleading as, for some reason, I assumed it was only a "full length directors" quizz ... Fair enough, that makes the challenge 3 times as hard! :)

philNovember 2, 2015 3:40 AM

#1. Gigi Saul Guerrero. #2. Larry Fessenden. #3.?. #4. Friedkin. #5. Hideo nakata. #6. Jennifer Kent. #7. Argento. #8. Tsukamoto. #9. Soska sisters. #10. ? #11.Ridley Scott. #12. Ted Geoghan. #13. Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 4:12 AM

Both are correct!
That leaves 3, 8, 10, 12, 21, 22, 23 and 24...

Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 4:13 AM

Number one's been guessed, so you can now Google her: Gigi Saul Guerrero!

Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 4:17 AM

Finally someone got Tsukamoto Shinya! I thought he'd be one of the first to be recognized, with that characteristic face of his.
You have 8, 12, 22 and 23 correct.

That just leaves 3, 10, 21 and 24!

Stitch_JonesNovember 2, 2015 5:33 AM

#10 - isn't that Todd Haynes?

Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 6:35 AM

It is! For those who wonder why he is included here, it is because horror can come in all shapes and sizes, and several people get very very scared by Todd's film SAFE.

Only three left to go: 3, 21 and 24!

ManateeAdvocateNovember 2, 2015 6:54 AM

You know me all too well. Thank you.

Emilie BlackNovember 2, 2015 12:32 PM

24 Izzy Lee

Emilie BlackNovember 2, 2015 12:33 PM

3 Larry Fessenden

Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 8:08 PM

Correct!
That just leaves numbers 3 and 21,...

Ard VijnNovember 2, 2015 8:09 PM

Correct, but we knew that already...Wait, what? Larry Fessenden is director #2. Number 3 hasn't been guessed yet!

Ard VijnNovember 3, 2015 9:42 AM

On the TwitchFilm Facebook page, #21 has been identified as Richard Raaphorst.
That just leaves director #3!

Alan CernyNovember 4, 2015 8:42 AM

#3 is Filip Tegstedt!

Ard VijnNovember 4, 2015 9:35 AM

Is the right answer!

Ard VijnNovember 8, 2015 10:00 PM

I've moved the answer overview over to the "Solutions" article, which also has all the mini-bios. That is here:
