Xing Yu Battles Deadly Cult In THE WRATH OF VAJRA Promo
At the Hong Kong Filmart today, Golden Network Asia Limited held a press conference to unveil the promo for The Wrath Of Vajra, a martial arts film from the producers behind the Painted Skin series. This marks Xing Yu's (aka Shi Yanneng) lead debut, and is being called China's answer to Rambo. The former Shaolin monk-turned-actor previously had supporting roles showcasing his martial arts talents in Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin and Flash Point.

According to director Law Wing Cheong, who is currently helming The Iceman Cometh with Donnie Yen, the film will explore themes of cultural pride and present a Chinese hero possessing a strong sense of justice and an indomitable spirit.  On the martial arts scenes, Cheong claims to revive a more realistic style than the recent Chinese action films and praises Xing Yu as the next generation's kung fu star. Also in the cast is former K-pop star Steve Yoo, B-boy dancer Nam "Poppin" Hyun-joon, 7-foot giant Jiang Bao Cheng, Zhang Yamei, Ikeuchi Hiroyuki and Kurata Yasuaki.

In the 1930s, before the Western powers entered World War II, a Japanese death cult called the Temple of Hades is ordered to work alongside the military to aid in the spiritual destruction of China. The elite warriors belive that the war can be won without the use of man-made weapons. They buy young children from impoverished parents and train them in martial arts to be assassins serving the Japanese Empire.
When he was 8 years old, Vajrasattva was among the children sold to the Temple of Hades. Forced by his captors to fight for food, he accidentally caused the death of his brother. He made a secret oath to take revenge. Many years later, and now the greatest assassin in the temple, he escapes to China and joins the Southern Shaolin Temple, where he receives spiritual enlightenment and vows to protect his own country against the Japanese.
The 3D film is expected to be released in the summer. You'll find the promo embedded below.

"Themes of cultural pride" = incredibly racist depictions of The Japanese and Westerners.

This appears to be heavily inspired by Tony Jaa's work. It's hard to tell if the fight sequences are any good because the cutting is too fast in the trailer, but it looks interesting enough.

Yes. I will watch this film.

Gosh, couldn't they have settled with something more original? It's like watching Ong Bak 2 and Ip Man combined.

If Ong Bak, Return of Chen Zhen, Storm Warriors had a baby.

Definitely over-produced, but will definitely watch. Fantastic to see Xing Yu taking a leading role! Congrats!

As a Chinese and a former HK film fan, I'm embarrassed by the nationalistic propaganda in what used to be a vibrant and exciting film market. Enough is enough.
