EVIL DEAD Red Band Trailer Certainly Is... Red. Very. Red.
I am of two minds when it comes to this 'new vision' of the Evil Dead horror films. There is that part of me that squirms and squiggles at the idea of anyone 'new vision-ing' anything that is perceived as a classic of its respected genre like Sam Raimi's first two Evil Dead films are to horror. No, no, no, no, no, no NO! Stop it. Stop messing with a classic!

Then there is that other part of me that says, 'Woo Howdy!' as the red band trailer for Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead unfolds and all the things that we loved about those seminal films is on full and gory display. Copious amounts of blood. A chainsaw. Blood. A hand gone bad. Blood. A rapey forest. Even more blood. You get the idea. There is no shortage of gore and violence in this trailer. And the beginning is effectively creepy too.

I have to be honest with you. I am considering locking that other half of my brain in the cellar and giving this new Evil Dead movie a go when it opens on April 12th.

Decide for yourselves.

Looks good as far as remakes are concerned.

Color tone and brightness all wrong. Even my wife made that comment and she hates horror movies. Not scary.

looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! But with Raimi as the producer, I didn't expect anything less.

Either my computer's bust, or the blood is mostly orange...

Stop. Making. Remakes.

Todd BrownJanuary 4, 2013 9:45 AM

If you're talking about the vomit sequence, that would be bile, not blood. Plenty of red later in ...

James DennisJanuary 4, 2013 11:51 AM

Aha, didn't realise it was bile. But the arm chopping blood still has a very orangey tinge to my eyes - it's not a deep crimson for sure (1.44/5)

Interesting that there's no Bruce Campbell type character. I think one of the things that made the original seem so psychotic was the humor, mixed with the gore. It looks like they're just going for a straight horror movie on this one.

Todd BrownJanuary 5, 2013 11:25 AM

You're thinking of Evil Dead 2. The original Evil Dead is played pretty much dead serious. Been a while since I've watched it, granted, but I remember being shocked at how straight a horror film it was when I first saw it after seeing the sequels first. And they've been very, very clear from day one of work on this one that their goal was to go back to that ...

Looks like a lot of fun.

That's true! That makes a lot of sense, too. I don't think they were very happy with ED1. I've seen all 3 several times but I think I still view ED2 as a remake of ED1. All this Evil Dead talk makes me want to get out my copy of The Evil Dead Companion.
