The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]
This fifteen disc box set of the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King begs a question for prospective buyers especially with The Hobbit complicating matters. Are the new transfers/versions of the films worth the upgrade to Bluray? The answer is a resounding yes. These films look significantly better than the previous Bluray editions. In fact I'll call this a must-own release for any fan of the series or fantasy film in general.
Anything else here is gravy but the set is also really classy looking. A metallic looking heavy cardboard box utilizing a magnet to hold the hinged lid in place opens to reveal three elegant black five-disc snap-cases. Everything is lavishly illustrated and the overall effect is impressive enough that you may just as well display this with any LOTR collectibles you have as put it on a shelf with the rest of your Blurays. It's worth noting that the presence of DVDs in this box is annoying but only slightly so. While upgrading the old DVD extended special features to Blu would have been nice they do look just fine here. Everything on the previous box sets is included here.
Curiously Jackson has gone on record as saying that these extended cuts we fans have made so much fuss over aren't the director's cuts or canon cuts he would like to make. Sure down the road there's going to be a massive box set incorporating new versions and both parts of The Hobbit but we're talking a good while here. garage sale all those old DVDs, Amazon Marketplace those suckers.
