Meet Joko Anwar: acclaimed director of Joni's Promise, Kala and The Forbidden Door an in-demand writer and apparently perfectly comfortable in a dress and curlers. In a country where social conservatism and censorship is always a problem, Anwar is currently directing a porn-themed stage musical and is appearing as an actor with a bit part in Madame X.
Releasing in Indonesian cinemas next week Madame X is the debut film from director Lucky Kuswandi, an action film featuring tight skirts, big hair, fancy makeup and men under it all. Yup, Indonesia may be about the last place where you'd expect to discover a transsexual superhero comedy but that's what they've got on their hands here and Anwar says to expect something somewhere between Iron Pussy and a Japanese tokusatsu television series.
