Renee Zellweger, Bradley Cooper (who has to be the hardest working and most diverse actor in big Hollywood today) and Ian McShane anchor Case 39 and with the film delivering a pair of fresh TV spots recently a couple of thoughts come leaping to mind.

One, Ian McShane is quite possibly the most believable actor working today. I don't know what it is about this guy but whether he's working with good material (Deadwood) or less good material (Death Race) if it's coming out of his mouth I'm just automatically inclined to believe it. This bodes well for Case 39, with McShane's character playing a cop who's going to have to be won over to accept the supernatural goings on. If he can believe it on screen then there's a fighting chance I'll believe it in my seat.

Two, director Christian Alvart has had an incredibly busy couple years. Since bursting on to the international scene in 2005 with Antibodies - a rare example of German horror and also a film covered heavily in these pages - Alvart has been busy preparing a number of other projects, seemingly all of which will have released over a single twelve month period. There's his English language German production Pandorum, his English language US production Case 39, and he's currently at the prestigious Oldenberg festival in Germany premiering his German language, German produced romantic thriller 8:28 a.m. And that's a lot of film in a short block of time.

As for Case 39 - opening on these shores this coming Friday - here's the official synopsis:

In CASE 39, family services social worker Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) thinks she has seen it all... until she meets 10-year old Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) and the child's cruel and dangerous parents.  Her worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to harm Lily, their only daughter.  Frightened for her life, Emily enlists the help of Detective Mike Barron (Ian McShane) and takes Lily in while she continues the search for the perfect foster family.  Just as it seems as though Lily is on her way to a more loving home, under the guidance of Emily and psychiatrist (Bradley Cooper), dark forces surrounding this young girl come to light and, little do they know, their attempts to protect her will only bring on greater horror...
