Trailer For Yasmin Ahmad's MUALLAF
UPDATE: Trailer now embedded in this entry, after the break.
Yasmin Ahmad is fast becoming a very important name in the international scene. Her film Mukhsin won two prizes in the Generations section of this year's Berlin International Film Festival. There have been retrospectives of her work at various other festivals, the latest being the Thessaloniki festival where she was also a jury member, and the Taipei Golden Horse festival. Over the course of four films - Rabun, Sepet, Gubra and Mukhsin - she has proven to be a storyteller with a big heart and a sensitive touch for stories that run the gamut of emotions and issues about humanity.
Her new film, Muallaf (The Convert), sees her taking a different direction; the story isn't autobiographical like in her previous films. It's about two Muslim girls who run away from an abusive father, and later befriend a Catholic schoolteacher. It's a tale of hope, love and forgiveness as the characters face the ghosts of their past.
No release date has been set for Malaysia, but the film will open in Singapore probably in March next year.
