The 54th San Sebastian International Film Festival (September 21-30, 2006) will host the World Premier of director Im Sang-Soo’s latest film, The Old Garden (오래된 정원).

Yup, that’s our good friend Im, responsible for The President’s Last Bang (그때 그사람들) and A Good Lawyer’s Wife (바람난 가족), among others. The Old Garden is his 5th feature, and the cast includes Yeom Jung-Ah (염정아), Ji Jin-Hee (지진희), and Yoon Yeo-Jung (윤여정). The film was produced by MBC Production, and international sales are handled by Cineclick Asia, who also handle Kim Ki-Duk’s Time (시간), and really like to have the films they rep invited to international festivals.

The Old Garden plot synopsis, courtesy of [KOFIC]:

“The Old Garden is set during the turbulent '80's when South Korea's military dictatorship used violent means to suppress student rebellions, particularly in the south. Adapted from a best-selling novel by Hwang Suk-young, the hero of the story leaves his girlfriend to join a student activist group, only to be arrested almost immediately, judged at a farcical trial and condemned to life imprisonment. While the political events, including those dealing with the Gwangju Massacre, are an important part of the tale, they take second place to the love story and the point of view of a woman abandoned by her boyfriend.”
