Dark Norwegian Folklore Hits The Big Screen In THALE
[Post updated to include the trailer for Nordaas' previous short film In Chambers]
This would appear to be the year of Norwegian folk tales on the big screen. The Nordic countries - and northern Europe in general - have rich traditions of myth and folklore that are little known outside of their own borders but with The Troll Hunter hitting Sundance and Aleksander Nordaas' Thale coming later this year, Norway's mythic creatures are getting a big boost.
Nordaas' picture revolves around a huldra - a seductive forest spirit who appears from the front to be a beautiful young woman but who also has a cow's tale and whose back appears to be like a hollowed out tree. The huldra has been known to offer rewards to those who satisfy them sexually and death to those who fail to do so and are also prone to stealing human babies. You can learn more about them here.
Thale is taking a realistic, largely effects-free approach to the material and, though the picture still has several months before it is complete, we are proud to premiere the first teaser here on ScreenAnarchy. Check it - and a gallery of images, plus the trailer for Nordaas' previous short film In Chambers - below.
