The Rock Wants To Produce And Star In Remake Of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA
I am going to try to be as diplomatic about this news as possible. First, just to be clear, the original Big Trouble In Little China holds a special place in my heart. My soul even. I watch it at least once a year. I have a Lo Pan POP! figure looming over me in the home office right now. When I planned Todd's bachelor party I arranged for private screening time at a former funeral home. What was one of the movie's the ScreenAnarchy lord and master picked? Big Trouble In Little China. Yeah. It is special for at least two of us here at ScreenAnarchy.

So how do you respond to news that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is in negotiations to produce and star in a remake of the cult classic?

This would seem to be the obvious response of anyone our age. Yet here we are, coming up on the 30th anniversary of the John Carpenter film and does anyone under 30 even know the original exists, apart from some truly hardcore genre fans? Probably not.

According to The Wrap The Rock is only in negotiations to produce and star in the remake. That, is not set in stone. Yet. X Men First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are already singed on by Fox to write the new script. If Johnson is signed on to the remake he would produce with his production company Seven Bucks Productions.

I love Dwayne Johnson. He is a terrific entertainer. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and his work. The thing about BTiLC and Jack Burton though is that he was a character clearly out of his element, fighting against Lo Pan in the underbelly of San Francisco. Kurt Russell had that swagger and false bravado down pat. I do not know if Johnson can emulate that kind of characteristic. That was part of the charm of the original, what made it so much fun, watching this fellow gweilo fumble around Little China and find himself in deep water (literally). Jack Burton was a goofball. Will The Rock allow himself to be the same in the remake? And if they take the remake in a different direction where is the appeal in that?

The great thing about all these experiences we had is that no one can take those away from us. If this turns out to be another cult classic for a younger generation of genre film lovers then let them have it. We old fogies still have our VHS, DVD, Blu-Rays at home. It is also on Netflix too so, hey young people, find some time to check it out.
