MEMORIES OF MURDER Coming to the Small Screen

It looks like Snowpiercer isn't the only Bong Joon-ho film getting the remake treatment. I don't normally cover TV news but I thought I'd make an exception for this. Considered by many to be one of the greatest Korean films of all time (it's my favorite), Memories of Murder is heading to the small screen in Korea as Signal.

Writer Kim Eun-hee (2006's Once in a Summer and Kdrama Three Days) will adapt the film, written by Bong Joon-ho and Shim Sung-bo, which itself was based on Kim Gwang-rim's 1996 play 'Come See Me'. No word yet on casting, but given Kim's stature in the Kdrama industry, not to mention the fame of the original film, I think we can safely expect a few big names.

This would be the second TV series is as many years to focus on the Hwaseong serial murder case which the film is based on. Last year, the show Gap-dong told the same story, though it was not directly related to the film.

The Kdrama realm is one I'm not very familiar with but this is something I'd be curious to check out.

I just spent $250 on acquiring a Memories of Murder 1st press Korean BluRay.

Yes I have nothing worthwhile to add here I simply wanted to tell someone about my ostentatious stupidity. A rip-off... for sure, however like you Pierce, I just adore the movie and my New Year's resolution was to bite the bullet and finally go after some of my most wanted out of print goodies!

I hope you didn't get one from the faulty first batch that skips 5 or so minutes on some players, like i did.

Yeah I heard this happened with some copies or occurs after some particular firmware updates. Thankfully I have the standard release as well which plays fine! Now I just need to track down a Digipak of Bong's Mother. I fear another high price tag though.

Pasta_BearFebruary 2, 2015 11:24 PM

I have the first pressing of Mother, but during my most recent viewing, it started skipping towards the end. This sort of thing just ruins your whole week.

Sad to hear! You can sell it to me if it only serves to unsettle your mood. Something tells me you'll learn to live with it though. :D

Thankfully i got it at release, so at least i didn't pay a cut-throat price, like i did for the DVD LE. It sucks though because i can't watch the film properly (at least in HD), because unlike the first run, the regular version is locked and i can only play region B compatible discs. It's a crying shame that after all these years this masterpiece still isn't available as a region B, english friendly release.

I hadn't thought about selling it until now. If you have a fair price in mind, feel free to make me an offer. I don't think we can PM in Disqus, but my name is Tempus on the forums if you'd care to send me a message over there.
Sorry to hijack this thread, Pierce. Thanks for all the amazing Korean film news.

No worries, glad to see the enthusiasm for Bong's back catalogue! I not sure I have any 1st press Korean blu-rays, that said I haven't had a player for all that long. However, for some lesser known (and older) Korean gems, I would highly recommend the new blu-ray series from the Korean Film Archive and Plain Archive. Beautiful packages and all the content is translated.

PM'd you over there. =)
