Kermode Launches Online Film Club with McBride's BREATHLESS
For the inaugural film, Kermode's choice is predictably off-kilter: Jim McBride's 1983 re-make of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, starring Richard Gere and Valerie Kaprisky. It is a film I remember Quentin Tarantino being very enthusiastic about back in the mid-nineties, specifically for its use of rear projection and ruminations on Marvel's Silver Surfer. I sought it out and thoroughly enjoyed it..and now, years later, I shall give it a second viewing thanks to the virtual prodding of Dr. Kermode.
For those interested, Kermode's introduction to Breathless - which includes a brief outline of his intentions for the Kermode Uncut Film Club - can be found below. While I don't intend to publish each of his introductions when they appear (it doesn't seem like there is any outlined schedule or future programme arranged as yet), I will be playing along as I for one do miss the days when interesting cult films were screened on late night television with insightful prologues from the likes of Alex Cox and Mark Cousins. I felt the least I could do was bring this applaudable new venture to your attention.
