TEN HUT! Platoon (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Has Platoon aged as well as The Deer Hunter, The Thin Red Line, or Apocalypse Now? I want to say no. But viewing it on Bluray I'm reminded of what a powerful film it is. That's a considerable feat given how easily director Oliver Stone's tale slips into melodrama. However histrionic the ending seems the movie makes a compelling case that war is mostly a playground for those who love power, destruction and self above all else. Stock characterizations disappear into grand performances, and lush cinematography meets relentless pacing as the film slowly builds toward a genuine sense of tragedy. What could come across as just another maudlin anti-war film seems almost like an eternal myth.

The film has only looked this good on the big screen and the extras here are standout You get  Audio Commentary by Director Oliver Stone, Audio Commentary by Military Advisor Dale Dye,  Deleted and Extended Scenes with Optional Commentary by Oliver Stone, Flashback to Platoon: Snapshot in Time: 1967 - 1968; Creating the 'Nam; Raw Wounds: The Legacy of Platoon, Documentaries: One War, Many Stories; Preparing for 'Nam, Vignettes: Caputo & the 7th Fleet; Dye Training Method; Gordon Gekko Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots.

Platoon is not the definitive Vietnam war film it was advertised to be but it is a timeless one ranking high in the ranks of the best war films ever made.
