Cannes 2011: First Clip From Rebecca Daly's THE OTHER SIDE OF SLEEP Is Chilling
Amidst all the old-hands at Cannes this year there is a healthy front of younger filmmakers coming to the festival with their sophomore films (Joachim Trier with Oslo, 31. August for instance) and even a few with their first features. Rebecca Daly is one of those fresh talents. She and her film The Other Side Of Sleep, a minimalist thriller playing Directors' Fortenight, has been getting a lot of buzz this weekend. Todd stated in his review:

Daly has a very strong eye for composition and draws a quality performance out of [Antonia] Campbell-Hughes, who is asked to convey a lot while doing very little.
The Other Side Of Sleep concerns Arlene, a young Irish factory worker who suffers from sleepwalking, and her increasingly strange involvement with a murder in her small town. A murder which frighteningly resembles her mother's death from years earlier.

Beyond the Cannes reviews we've had just a few, albeit highly moody, stills to go on, but now the first clip from the film has emerged. Even in this short, mostly expository scene, it clearly showcases the dark atmosphere we've been hearing about. Only time will tell, but for me The Other Side of Sleep may be the film to come out of Cannes that I am most anticipating.
