Master Telugu filmmaker and ScreenAnarchy fave, Ram Gopal Varma appears to be dipping his toes into Quentin Tarantino styled overindulgence, but it actually doesn't look too bad. His latest opus,
Rakta Charitra, is spread over two releases with the film totaling over 5 hours of gritty, dirt-colored carnage. This Telugu language (Tollywood) feature focuses on the apparent life and possible deeds of South Indian political leader Pantala Ravindra, who was reviled by the Indian Political establishment and beloved by his consituents, enough so to be re-elected six times! Ravi was murdered in 2005, and apparently some feel like RGV did not do such an even-handed job portraying of the parties allegedly involved, especially since they are still alive, and he has begun receiving death threats! According to RGV:
People ask me if "RAKTA CHARITRA" will be a true story
and I tell them that it is a true story in my perception. The reason I
say this is that the events which happened in such secrecy when told by
the various concerned and related people after such a long time are
bound to have different perspectives not to mention their individual
agendas. So for me as a neutral guy I have to read and understand in
between the lines so as to conclude on what could be the nearest truth
from my perception. So in the process of getting closest to the truth I
became a journalist to a detective to a psycho analyst.
A risky move, but let's hope it pays off. It is a complicated story filled with local political lore that I won't even pretend to understand. Ram Gopal Varma has been on something of a skid for the last few years since his last big success,
Company. However, he appears to have come to his senses and gone back to the gritty style that has served him well and re-hired
Company star Vivek Oberoi in the lead role. Let's hope that this time, the ingredients that created a masterpiece will duplicate the success. I'd say that from the trailer, this one is looking pretty good. The tentative release date is September 24 for Part 1, with Part 2 following shortly.
