DOGVILLE COLLECTION 2 DISC SET Warner Archive Collection

Film historians talk alot about the emergence of the talkies but you seldom hear them mention the "barkies." Granted they weren't quite as historically groundbreaking but they were housebroken. Bad puns aside the Dogville Collection offers 9 shorts that were originally used to supplement screening of feature films in the 1930s. These comedies relied on the charms of a costume canine cast and dubbed in human voices and were co-directed by none other than Jules White who later became famous for his work with The Three Stooges.

Each short is patterned after a type of film popular at the time. sadly, the horror genre isn't really touched on since Universal had only just started their series of famous films that would fostered what came to be called the horror genre but you do get a doggie musical, a murder mystery, a sports film and even a war effort. I enjoyed this two disc set a lot and recommend it not only to fans of vintage comedy but specifically Three Stooges, Little Rascals and other short form early talkies.

The Warner Archive Collection is groundbreaking. You simply go to the site, pick the movie you want and they make you your own copy. Decent Sleeve, plain black plastic snap-case and no special features. They also make a point of saying that they don't go out of their way to remaster anything but every film I've gotten must have undergone some sort of process because they all look great. This is a no brainer.
