PINEAPPLE CALAMARI: Watch The Brilliant Stop-Motion Short Now!
Stop whatever it is you are doing and give over the next nine minutes of your life to watching Kasia Nalewajka's wonderful stop motion animation Pineapple Calamari, and I promise that you will thank me for it. On the one hand a heart-breaking tale of loss and denial, a beautifully understated portrait of a same sex relationship, it's also an absurd, hilarious and brilliantly told story of coping, enabling, ambition, alcoholism and so much more besides.

I first saw the film at Sitges back in 2014, where I was serving on the Animated Shorts Jury. As soon as Pineapple Calamari unfolded before me, the competition - in my eyes at least - was over. When it came to our deliberations, my fellow jurors were of the same opinion, and we awarded the film the category's top prize - one of many such awards Nalewajka's film - which she co-wrote with Daniel Negret and Manuela Lupini - won on the circuit that year.

Today, the creators of Pineapple Calamari have released it online, in all its horse-riding, whisky chugging, frog-tossing glory for you to enjoy. But don't take my word for it, just hit play on the video below and delight in the twisted majesty of Pineapple Calamari.
