AYAMÉ Teases Irish Sci-Fi

Managing Editor; Dallas, Texas (@peteramartin)

I'm Irish, I love science fiction, and I love movies. So it feels like Ayamé was custom-designed for me.

According to its official description, the film is "set in the near future. The story revolves around a rescue mission on what was thought to be an uninhabited planet." Now, here's the catch: the movie hasn't been made yet.

Filmmaker Conor Maloney, who hails from Dublin, Ireland, explains: "My approach was to produce a small 'proof of concept' piece to show what the film could be. I self financed the production by using a life insurance policy my parents had been paying into for me. With the help of my producer, I managed to make contact with John Hurt, who was eager and willing to get involved and lend his voice to the final piece." Maloney adds: "As a piece of science-fiction, Ayamé stands for something unique in the Irish film market."

You can watch the proof of concept video below. Bearing in mind that it's more about selling a mood and the filmmaker's ability to establish that mood, I love how it looks, and also how it chooses to slowly reveal an astronaut's appearance. We've also got a behind the scenes look at the making of the video.

What do you think?
