Power Star Pawan Kalyan Is GABBAR SINGH
Gabbar Singh is the title of the Telugu remake of Salman Khan's hugely successful 2010 film, Dabangg. Dabangg was a south Indian style masala/action beat-em-up film that did insane business and proved to be another step on his road to the top of the box office charts. In the last few months we've now seen two films attempt to recreate that magic at the box office. The first remake was the Tamil film Osthe, which did alright, but seemed to disappear pretty quickly from the box office charts. The second will be this film, which has a significantly bigger star attached, is Gabbar Singh.

Gabbar Singh stars Pawan Kalyan, Power Star Pawan Kalyan to his legion of fans, and he's among the top stars in Tollywood. Also along for the ride is pan Indian starlet Shruti Hassan, daughter of Kamal Hassan, who recently impressed audiences in 7aam Arivu with Surya. It is worth noting that the villain in the two versions of Dabangg was played by Sonu Sood, who has been replaced by Abhimanyu Singh for this Telugu adaptation.

Of note to Indian film fans is that the title, Gabbar Singh, is also the name of the most famous cinematic villain in Indian film history. Gabbar Singh was the lead dacoit in all-time blockbuster Sholay, and the character, brought to life by Amjad Khan, is one of the most iconic figures in Bollywood history. The fact that the name has been appropriated for a hero in a Telugu film is a bit odd, but there you have it.

We have the first look at Gabbar Singh's trailer with not a whole lot of footage, but it seems fairly true to the Hindi original so far. Gabbar Singh is due in theaters May 9th.
