An Open Letter To The Entire DVD and BluRay Distribution Industry: Where Is SYMBOL?
For some reason I re-read the reviews we have posted here at ScreenAnarchy for Hitoshi Matsumoto's "Symbol". Every single one of these has marked the film as excellent, creative, funny, visionary and just flat-out brilliant. On top of that the audiences at the screenings seemed to be very positive, laughing out loud and often.
In fact, "Symbol" ended up on a few "best of 2009" lists and on a few "best of 2010" lists.
The general consensus amongst everyone I've spoken with seems to be that this is indeed an awesome movie, and it is not just the snobbery critics who say that.
I also noticed that in the comments a fair number of people said they were hoping for a DVD or a BluRay to arrive soon. Our very own Niels Matthijs worded it best when he stated: " I am standing here, money in hand... ".
It is now two years after the first review for Hitoshi Matsumoto's "Symbol" was posted on this site. The only release so far has been a Japanese DVD without subtitles. Needless to say we are still standing here, money in hand...
In my review I asked: " Optimum, Manga UK, Eureka, Third Window Films, anyone: you listening? " Today I will add to those Siren Visual, Criterion, Madman, Arrow, Kaze, Funimation, Blue Underground, Dutch Film Works, Panorama... if I missed your company feel free to include yourself... I do not know how difficult the Japanese rights holders are with regards to this movie, but can anyone please try and see if it is possible to release this film anywhere with English subtitles?
Regards and thanks in advance,
a fan standing here, with money in hand.
