Sigur Rós Frontman To Score Cameron Crowe's WE BOUGHT A ZOO

Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) will present his latest music-related film Pearl Jam Twenty at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. It's a documentary which chronicles the lead-up to the formation of the titular band, using over 1,200 hours of rare and unseen footage. He certainly doesn't want us to forget he's passionate about music and film together.

After that, set to be released right around Christmas, Crowe has an interesting project called We Bought A Zoo, which has an impressive cast including Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Thomas Haden Church. Based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee, the film centers on a father (Damon) who, after the death of his wife, relocates his family to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.

What may be most exciting about the project is who Crowe has revealed to be doing the score: none other than Jónsi, frontman of Icelandic rock outfit Sigur Rós. Tom VanDerWerff of The A.V. Club Tweeted the following (special thanks to The Playlist for digging it up) - "Jónsi from Sigur Rós is scoring We Bought A Zoo. Everybody add him to your Oscar predictions all at once."

It's a bit early in the year for predictions like that but I can see where he's coming from. With Sigur Rós Jónsi has created some of the most unique and breathtaking music of the last 15 years, a selection of which was used in Crowe's Vanilla Sky, one of the reasons that movie works like it does (haters go back and look again - there's a lot more to it than meets the eye).

Its unclear if Jónsi will be flying solo for the score or whether Crowe will bring in others (early indications suggested the likes of Neil Young and Eddie Vedder), or even if it will be entirely new music or a mixture of old and new. Regardless, any usage of music by Sigur Rós or Jónsi himself is a plus, and it's an even bigger plus considering it'll be in a film by a director like Crowe who truly understands how to utilize music.
