Japan Flix: 'Teke Teke 2'

Reiko never had many friends, however things only get worse for her after an altercation with Erica, one of the popular girls at school. Soon, Reiko's only friend Natsuki begins to notice that she is behaving strangely. It seems that the girls who are her enemies soon find themselves dead - completely dismembered. What is the connection between Reiko and the legend of TekeTeke? Natsuki must unravel this mystery and discover the truth before it's too late.

Director Kôji Shiraishi released Teke Teke and it's sequel back to back and in some ways the sequel is better than the first. It's still pretty standard stuff in regards to the bevy of horror films that Japan dishes out every year but instead of sticking with the standard 'race against time before the evil spirit is gonna get you' story screenwriter Takeki Akimoto explores other themes such as peer pressure and bullying, Reiko's sees her only course of action is using Teke Teke to get back at the girls who pick on her and have alienated her from her only friends. Or so she thinks.

Master of gore Yoshihiro Nishimura is allowed to toss around a few more body halves than he did in the first one. There will be one point in the film where I guarantee you will say, 'Wow! That's a lot of blood from just one broom handle' though. The gore quota is only slightly increased.

On the whole though I liked this one more. It just had that extra bit of soul in it that made it more interesting. Or perhaps the themes of peer pressure and bullying resonated more on a personal level than 'Egads! I'm wearing red I'm going to die in three days' ever could.

The second Teke Teke film will be available for sale or rent through iTunes from online distributor JapanFlix this coming Friday!
