Todd's Thoughts On THE KARATE KID Remake
The remake of The Karate Kid hits theaters tomorrow and so it is the subject of my weekly column at Showcase this week. Head over there for the full review but, in short, though the title is nonsense since they're all doing kung fu - a fact the movie itself explicitly acknowledges - once you get past that it's good. Really good. Better than the original by a comfortable margin, I'd say, and boasting what is certainly the best English language dramatic performance of Jackie Chan's career and possibly the best overall regardless of language.  And, yes, the asshat comment in the review is directed at certain people in the comment thread here last time I posted about the film.

You know, I actually wanted to see this from the beginning. Let me put my asshat on and take a look ...

Heh. The asshat comment primarily meant for the charmer in the previous comment thread who said he wanted to punch Jaden Smith in the face and others dropping similar comments.

The hostility towards this movie was always weirdly uniform, but the moment it started getting positive reviews the asshats got weirdly racial.

If only there were anything weird about it. Sadly, it's all too predictable and familiar.

I was only "kidding", sorry. I don't wanna punch that boy in the face. First, since he took karat...sorry, kung fu...nah...kar...frack it, martial arts lessons, he would probably destroy me before I could raise a hand on his rich hollywood gangsta face. And his parents would put their lawyer$ on my ass, so...

No, truly, I just can't stand this boy's face. I have nothing against celebrities children trying to act (Kiefer Sutherland can be good or even great when he wants to: Dark City, Stand by me, Lost boys, etc.), but, sorry, something just makes me wanna buy a bazooka when I see pics of that kid. I won't see the movie, but I'll have the DVD for free in a few months and I'll take a look at it, JUST (and ONLY) to see Jackie Chan's acting, something that could give us lots of surprises (in the dramatic side, 'cause he's already a fabulous comic actor) in th future.

Glad to know I'm a charmer, though... ^^

I have nothing against the kid, I have everything against these pointless remakes.

What's an asshat by the way?
A type of toilet-seat?

BlakberiJune 11, 2010 2:12 PM

"hollywood (sic) gangsta face"? How is Jayden Smith, the son of a rapper turned tv star turned pop rap act turned movie star remotely 'gangsta'?

Shall we all say the obvious?
