Fantastic Fest 09: Canada Gets Into the Revenge Game With SWEET KARMA

As you can guess from that poster to the left - a poster designed by our very own Swarez, incidentally - upcoming Canadian exploitation picture Sweet Karma has thrown a bit of a wrinkle into its revenge story.  The fact is director and co-writer Andrew Thomas Hunt based his film at least partially on the real story of flesh trading rings busted in my home town of Toronto in a string of raids between 2004 and 2008.  So while this is a film unafraid to lay on the flesh it's got a bit more going on with it than just a male fantasy appeasement.  Soon to premiere at Fantastic Fest, here's an excerpt from the festival write up ...

Karma Balint is a shy, mute Russian woman whose sister Anna left for Canada with bright hopes of making some money for the two of them. But after being whisked away by the Russian recruiter of Canada-bound "housemaids," Anna never sent the money, she never wrote back--she just disappeared. When Karma discovers that Anna's body has been found in the woods on the outskirts of Toronto, the apparent victim of a Russian mafia hit, she sets off on a bloody, intercontinental trail of revenge that sees her face off--armed with only two hands, a calculating brain and a hefty dose of willpower--with some of the sleaziest elements of Toronto's organized criminal underground.
