13:52:47 Genxloser : cant wait till that hanzo box set.
13:52:48 zombi69 : Ok, where would you like to start?
13:53:08 zombi69> Miike, or Japanese cinema in general?
13:53:39 Godiego> Tom, curious about your background as a writer prior to midnight eye
13:53:55 zombi69> ok..I guess we'll start there
13:54:04 Genxloser> hehe
13:54:50 Ghullie> Irgend jemand hier der w*nscht, dass das folgende Interview auf Deutsch *bersetzt wird
13:55:03 lady_luna> ja, auch von meiner seite aus
13:55:12 Genxloser> hey i can't understand
13:55:13 Inglorious_Bastard> Right...
13:55:20 Agitator> Working as a freelance film critic since 1997, first in my native Holland, then gradually also UK and US mags. Was scriptwriter for animation studio for a while. We even got a BAFTA nomination.
13:55:25 Godiego> nihongo wa hanase desu ka?
13:55:42 Agitator> Chotto dake. Still studying.
13:56:00 Ghullie> sorry guys we're just asking if anybody needs a translation into german but it doesn't look like
13:56:16 Ghullie> so sorry for this
13:56:19 zombi69> good call Ghullie
13:56:20 Genxloser> i only understand english
13:56:36 Inglorious_Bastard> :)
13:56:50 zombi69> Tom, how did you hook up with Artmagic?
13:56:57 zombi69> Artsmagic
13:57:28 zombi69> and..which one of their releases would you say are you the fondest of?
13:57:45 Inglorious_Bastard> Good call
13:58:45 MesManiac> As your biggest fan I'd love to know, why japanese film if your writing shows no passion for it?
13:59:38 Agitator> They contacted me after the Miike book came out and asked if wanted to do some commentaries for all these Miike films they'd acquired. They've done some excellent work so far, have drastically improved the quality of their releases too. Hard to say which one I like best. Maybe the as yet unreleased Rokuro Mochizuki films, I enjoyed doing those.
13:59:44 zombi69> Mes, please wait till Tom answers
13:59:56 zombi69> MesManiac that is...sorry
14:00:15 Agitator> MesManiac, you must have seen Perfect Blue...
14:01:03 zombi69> Yes, I would agree on the quality. They have done a great job since they first started their US line.
14:01:12 schaelli1> Speaking of Rokuro Mochizuki, which is your favourite modern Yakuza-Eiga director?
14:01:26 zombi69> good question Marc!
14:02:24 Agitator> Easy question, Miike of course. But Mochizuki's stuff from the 90s is excellent, as are Kitano's early films.
14:03:10 zombi69> next question please
14:03:12 MesManiac> Mes, how did it feel to have Miike contradict your obviously fabricated notes featured on the Gozu dvd?
14:03:33 Agitator> How would say they were fabricated?
14:03:45 schaelli1> In that case which of Miike's YE?
14:04:16 MesManiac> Well most of your ""facts"" were blown apart by Miike
14:04:23 MesManiac> So are you saying he's a liar?
14:04:27 zombi69> welcome Jonny
14:04:33 Jonny_Redman> Hello
14:04:36 lady_luna> hi
14:05:00 Inglorious_Bastard> Hey
14:05:27 zombi69> Mes Maniac we are not here to attack Tom, please tone down your questions, thx!
14:05:31 Jonny_Redman> How's the discussion going so far?
14:05:32 Genxloser> could you list a couple lesser known samurai films that touched you and that you would recommend as a must experience wise?
14:05:38 Agitator> Almost too many to name. Dead or Alive made a big impact on me. Ley Lines is one of my favourites, and that whole trilogy is damn good.
14:06:19 feral_cat> Is it racial slurs that are beepd on Ley Lines?
14:07:14 zombi69> ok, please hold questions until the last one is answered by Tom.
14:07:18 schaelli1> Sorry Guys gotta go, my little girls crying for her daddy... ah more diry diapers...
14:07:23 feral_cat> sorry
14:07:27 zombi69> take care Marc!
14:07:53 zombi69> np, it just get confusing when there are too many questions asked at once.
14:08:21 Agitator> I'm not entirely sure what those bleeps cover, they're in some pretty weird places. Guess Miike just likes to joke with his viewers a bit.
14:08:39 Jonny_Redman> Cool, let me know when the floor is open for new questions.
14:08:55 zombi69> ok JOnny
14:09:08 Genxloser> what about my question
14:09:21 zombi69> sorry GenX, please repeat it
14:09:30 zombi69> Hold a sec Jonny
14:09:46 Genxloser> i asked if he could list a couple samurai films that touched him and that he would recommend to others
14:09:51 Genxloser> lesser known samurai film
14:10:00 zombi69> ok
14:10:00 MesManiac> Tom, about your recent Teruo Ishii interview. Since you obviously didn't research anything, what was your method of choosing questions? Picking them out of a hat perhaps?
14:10:41 zombi69> Ok enough of that
14:10:45 Inglorious_Bastard> Some people are just angry at the world
14:11:25 Godiego> Your writing on Miike is often a search for meaning in his films, but often in interviews and in his own writing, Miike dismisses that his work contains any ""messages"" at all. How would you explain for this dispartiy between your interpretations, and his dismissal?
14:11:44 zombi69> Hold questions please
14:11:47 Agitator> Kenji Misumi's early films like Destiny's Son, Kiru and Sword Devil are very interesting.
14:11:55 Genxloser> thank you
14:12:10 zombi69> Ok Godiego's question is up
14:12:24 zombi69> welcome Harry
14:12:44 Jonny_Redman> Hi Harry
14:13:01 HarryTeelCat> Hello
14:13:14 Inglorious_Bastard> hI, HI
14:13:23 zombi69> Jonny if you want ask your question next
14:13:44 Ghullie> yes please let's go on
14:13:53 Genxloser> kind of slow answers. is a delay?
14:13:55 Agitator> I think Miike doesn't aim to impose his views on his audience. His reasons for making films isn't to tell the world what he thinks. But that doesn't mean his films aren't abour anything and that they don't contain parts of himself, his personality and his concerns.
14:14:06 Jonny_Redman> I just wanted to ask what Miike is like 'as a person'?
14:14:11 Agitator> Sorry. Long answers = slow answers
14:14:12 Godiego> But what does that say about you as a writer?
14:14:20 Genxloser> oh ok.. np
14:14:47 zombi69> please pm me if you want to ask a question, should make it easier
14:14:58 Jonny_Redman> What's he do in his spare time etc?
14:14:59 Genxloser> good idea
14:15:13 Agitator> As a person: calm, open-minded, pretty philosophical. I don't think he has spare time.
14:15:15 Genxloser> maybe we give you question and you ask it. in pm
14:15:20 Ghullie> Yes good idea please do the questioning zombi69
14:15:21 zombi69> sure
14:16:08 Agitator> What it says about me as a writer: that I'm interpreting, as any film critic does.
14:16:30 zombi69> ok Tom Inglorius Bastard would like to know what you think og Miike's ONE MISSED CALL?
14:16:41 zombi69> of that is
14:17:33 Agitator> I thought it was rather unimaginative, somewhat messy post-Ring horror film. I liked moments of it, The hospital scene was quite good.
14:17:53 zombi69>
14:18:31 Genxloser> acceptance rather then accepted
14:18:50 HarryTeelCat> Is it true that you just started wathing Japanese films five years ago?
14:19:13 Agitator> I'm not sure if it's acceptance or a fad. As long as it means that more Asaian films get released in the US, then it's fien by me.
14:19:22 zombi69> please PM me with any questions Harry, thx
14:19:26 HarryTeelCat> Have you ever had an audience in mind when you're writing?
14:19:49 HarryTeelCat> Or is it more fun to just jerk yourself off with a keyboard?
14:19:49 Genxloser> ok thanks
14:20:15 Agitator> The person who claimed I started watching Japanese films five years ago has never met me and doesn't know the first thing about me.
14:20:35 zombi69> sorry about that Tom
14:20:55 Jonny_Redman> The idiots are out in full force tonight!
14:20:58 Guest360> Almost seems like the same person is using two (or three) accounts...
14:21:17 zombi69>
14:21:38 Agitator> That's okay. I'm glad someone finally bothered to verify a few false claims that have been floating around the forums
14:21:55 Agitator> Sorry, I didn't see the Zhang Yimou film you mentioned
14:22:07 Genxloser> oh man you gotta check that out :)
14:22:09 Genxloser> masterpiece
14:22:24 Agitator> I'll try if I get the chance
14:22:37 zombi69>
14:23:21 Agitator> I will probably do an Agitator part 2 at some point, but it'll be a while. Fornow it's fun to observe where Miike's going with his career.
14:24:02 zombi69> Tom, what are your thoughts on director Sabu? Why do you think he hasn't broke into the North American DVD market yet or any for that matter outside of Japan?
14:25:27 Agitator> I like Sabu's stuff a lot. He seems to be redoing the same kind of story with each film, but they're quite different and contain a lot more nuance than you'd think. Dunno why he hasn't made it big yet, though I hear his films do well in Germany
14:25:52 zombi69> Which film of his do you enjoy the most?
14:26:17 zombi69> I personal favorite of mine would have to be MOnday.
14:26:31 Agitator> I hope some distributor will pick up a few of Sabu's films for the US. I like Postman Blues a lot, which was the first of his I saw. monday and Unlucky Monkey are exellent too.
14:26:50 zombi69> Yes agreed
14:27:13 lady_luna> sorry guy i got to go
14:27:17 zombi69>
14:27:20 lady_luna> was pleasure to listen
14:27:22 zombi69> take care Luna
14:27:23 Ghullie> Hey Tom thanks for patience and sharing your thoughts, I'm from switzerland, I admire your work, but hell I have to work tomorrow and so my bed is calling me
14:27:36 zombi69> take care Ghullie
14:27:52 Ghullie> Thanks for having us and a great stay at CN
14:28:22 Ghullie> take care too mate
14:28:31 zombi69> ciao
14:28:32 lady_luna> have a great night
14:28:36 Agitator> Good night! I just did commentaries for four Rokuro Mochizuki films that will be gradually coming out over the next few monhts: Fire WIthin, Another Lonely Hitman, Mobster's Confessions and A Yakuza in Love
14:28:39 lady_luna> enjoy and good night
14:28:48 zombi69> bye Luna
14:29:11 Buono> hey hey hey
14:29:16 zombi69> yes both FIRE WITHIN and ANOTHER LONELY HITMAN look great!
14:29:19 Inglorious_Bastard> Hey buono
14:29:28 zombi69> hello Buono
14:29:28 Buono> sup, IB
14:29:39 zombi69>
14:30:00 Inglorious_Bastard> good question
14:30:10 Agitator> I'd say Fire Within is one of the best Japanese films of the 90s. Lonely Hitman was one of the films that really got me turned on to contemporary japanese cinema.
14:30:31 Buono> i would do anything to see ANY version of Yuki's Revenge
14:31:23 zombi69> Buono, if you have any question please PM them to me and I'll throw them in the order.
14:31:35 Inglorious_Bastard> Tarantino is a *BLEEP*
14:31:48 Genxloser> hey i love qt
14:31:58 Agitator> I know no more about it than you. Miike was preparing a stage play at the time that happened, which premiered last October in Tokyo, but I haven't heard of any further plans. Should be a pretty bizarre play if it does happen.
14:32:07 Genxloser> thank you
14:32:46 zombi69> Ok...Tom thoughts on Fukusaku's YAKUZA PAPERS and the HVE release...
14:33:08 Genxloser> oh man i can answere that. kick ass :)
14:33:15 Genxloser> love that set
14:33:54 Agitator> What can I say? Superb treatment of some amazing films. I'm quite in awe of the care and attention HVE put inot that set. The extras are amazing, the films look superb. I'm really happy I could play a small part in it.
14:34:57 Genxloser> indeed. best 70$ i spent in a while
14:35:02 zombi69> Inglorious_Bastard> Mes, have you got any info on upcoming releases of Miike's work with eng subs?
14:36:11 Agitator> I hear someone's releasing his two Family films, some of the worst he's done. I guess anything with the name Miike on it is good to go at the moment
14:37:06 zombi69> Ok, Tom what can you tell us about the film RINJIN 13 aka NEIGHBOUR 13
14:37:17 zombi69> directed by Yasuo Inoue
14:37:36 zombi69> I know it is from the manga
14:38:20 zombi69> Miike has a small cameo as the angry neighbour
14:39:08 Agitator> I was pleasantly surprised by it when I saw it in Rotterdam last month. A guy who was bullied as a kid develops this Jekyll & hyde-esque split personality that goes off for revenge against his tormentors. The style of the film is less OTT than you'd expect. Kind of reminded me of Toyoda's style on Blue Spring. And yes, small cameo from Miike. He meets the same fate he meets in every small cameo he's done so far
14:39:50 zombi69> well I look forward to that film then!
14:39:56 Genxloser> nice
14:40:00 zombi69> Genxloser> was curious if he knew anything about miike's romantic life... he seems to portray alot of homosexual themes and very violent against women.. is he gay or a serial killer or none just a family man?
14:40:29 Agitator> Definitely keep an eye out. There'll be a review of Neighbour #13
14:41:52 Agitator> Miike has three kids and as far as I know is as much family man type as someone who makes 5 films a year can be
14:42:08 Genxloser> 3 kids eh.. wow. hehe thanks.
14:42:20 zombi69>
14:42:23 Genxloser> wander if he let them watch his films haha
14:42:53 Genxloser> lol
14:42:58 Agitator> Favourite Toyoda: Blue Spring
14:42:59 Buono> haha....those were seperate questions
14:43:02 Genxloser> aha
14:43:12 Buono> sorry for that confusion
14:43:26 zombi69> we're letting you catch up Buono! ;)
14:43:31 Buono> oh, ok
14:43:42 Agitator> Kill Bill: I avoided it for a while, but I've come to really enjoy it now
14:43:53 Genxloser> great films kill bill 1 and 2
14:44:11 Genxloser> as is all QT stuff.
14:45:10 Agitator> 10 fave films: Seven Samurai,n
14:45:10 Inglorious_Bastard> Kill Bill was a drop down from his previous work I though
14:45:43 Genxloser> pulp fiction definitely his masterpiece
14:45:49 Genxloser> hard to go up from that
14:46:13 Genxloser> kill bill was just a homage
14:46:58 Inglorious_Bastard> That's what I don't really like about it... It's a kinda of ""rip""
14:47:10 Agitator> Sorry about that. The rest: Clockwork Orange, Scarface, Exorcist, Caro Diario, Dead or Alive 2, Wild Bunch, Sorcerer, Once Upon a Time in the West. Is that ten? let me count
14:47:42 zombi69> nice selection....CLOCKWORK is up there for me as well
14:47:51 Buono> I love Once Upon a Time in the West. Leone's my favorite director ever
14:47:57 Genxloser> dead or alive 2 is up there on mine also
14:48:05 Inglorious_Bastard> Nice list, do you like Fight Club?
14:48:12 zombi69>
14:48:24 Agitator> That was nine. I guess 10 could be Videodrom or Taxi Driver
14:48:40 Genxloser> so many great films left out :P
14:48:49 zombi69> ah..some Canadian content! ;)
14:49:03 Agitator> Too many great films to name...
14:49:19 Genxloser> interesting that most are american of your favs.
14:51:19 Genxloser> After I posted information about The Wretched - the UK produced zombie western slated to star Chow Yun Fat as a bounty hunter
14:51:28 Genxloser> theres the chow yun fat movie wretched
14:51:40 Agitator> Well, the US does have a pretty damn rich film history. Ilove Peckinpah, Friedkin, Siegel, Fuller, etc.
14:52:07 Genxloser> true true
14:52:12 Agitator> Haven't really kept up with Chow Yun-Fat, Kind of gave up when the Jodie Foster movie came out.
14:53:01 Genxloser> man he really went downhill
14:53:51 zombi69> Tom, where do you see the current Japanese horror genre going? Any yet to be releases titles you'd like to reccomend?
14:53:51 Buono> seems like the trend with a lot of Asian actors converting to American flicks
14:53:59 Genxloser> never works
14:54:29 feral_cat> Thw wretched does sound good though
14:54:30 zombi69> I guess they would be hard to recommend, but point out
14:54:52 Inglorious_Bastard> Hopefully Sho, Riki and Tadanobu don't jump over to America
14:54:57 Genxloser> yeah but were talking about the killer
14:55:04 Genxloser> in a westerner as bounty hunter?
14:55:19 Agitator> The new Takashi Shimizu movie The Strnager form Afar aka Marebito is really unusual. That's one in a series of I think five horror movies that were made last year in Japan that look intriguing. Only saw the Shimizu one, though.
14:55:55 Agitator> The series is called Horror Bancho series. Another was written by Sakichi Sato, the guy who worte Gozu and ichi the Killer.
14:57:44 Genxloser> whoever wrote gozu needs to be locked in a mental ward
14:58:08 Jonny_Redman> What's Miike's view on the way his films have been censored on DVD and Video in various countries around the world. Most obvious choice is the way Ichi The Killer was cut for it's UK release.
14:58:13 Agitator> Well, he's still on the loose, and directing movies too now.
14:58:47 feral_cat> Takashi Ishii said he does not think the Angel guts series is exploitation, do you agree with him?
14:59:13 Agitator> Miike has said that he doesn't mind censorship too much. He certainly hasn't objected to any of it.
14:59:30 Genxloser> i don't buy that from him
14:59:40 Genxloser> dude had a girl with a dog in a movie
14:59:47 zombi69> How about this new series of films from the Japanese Horror Thearter
15:00:39 zombi69> KASEN (INFECTION) 2004 dir: Masayuki Ochiai and YOGEN (PREMONITION) 2004 dir: Norio Tsuruta will be released here in North America on KASEN (INFECTION) May 17th and YOGEN (PREMONITION)
15:00:59 Agitator> I have yet to watch the Angel Guts films. I did see the Ishii interview and that was quite impressive. If you oook at it from a business angel, of course it's exploitation. tThe Nikkatsu studios that produced starting doing only soft pron in the 70s just to survive, so in that sense it's exploitation, yes.
15:01:27 Agitator> look, not oook. business angle, not angel. Sorry
15:02:01 feral_cat> He is pretty funny in the interview when talking about Spiderman
15:02:41 Agitator> I haven't seen anything about the Tsuruta and Ochiai films yet, I'm afraid.
15:03:11 Agitator> For what it's worth, I rather liked Raimi's Spiderman movies.
15:03:15 zombi69>
15:03:25 Genxloser> haha
15:03:40 Genxloser> i have like 20 questions queued up in pm
15:03:42 Agitator> Not the kind of scene that needs an interpretation, really...
15:03:54 Genxloser> really? i have no idea what it meant
15:04:15 Genxloser> we had a big discussion on forums and noone had a clue
15:04:31 zombi69>
15:04:57 Genxloser> why would you want to be a film critic. lowest form of being :)
15:05:07 Buono> =(
15:05:11 Pretty_Riki> Tom, while I admire the fact that you've been able to keep up your website, and even had a few books published, I've never felt like I understood what it was that keeps you writing about Japanese film in particular. Specifics?
15:05:29 Genxloser> hehe
15:05:40 zombi69> Riki...please wait your turn
15:05:46 Agitator> Advice: just write, read and watch films as often as you can.
15:07:52 Genxloser> if you ever read the book life on a wire you would understand my hatred for film critis
15:08:00 Genxloser> a book about al pacino's life
15:08:23 Agitator> What does it say about film critics?
15:08:35 Genxloser> they were so unbelievably brutal towards him
15:08:48 Genxloser> basically spitting on his art after he shed blood, sweat and tears
15:09:02 Genxloser> while they sat on their asses criticizing him
15:09:08 Inglorious_Bastard> Bummer, what scum
15:09:15 Jonny_Redman> Gotta go, good chatting with you guys... Tom, Steve... Cheerio!
15:09:27 Buono> cya, man
15:09:35 zombi69> take care Jonny
15:09:43 Agitator> See ya jonny
15:09:49 Pretty_Riki> ""A critic is someone who knows the way, but can't drive the goddamn car"" - Chuck D
15:09:57 Genxloser> hehe
15:09:58 Jonny_Redman> Nice one. Speak soon.
15:10:07 feral_cat> I believe if you put ""art"" out there you must be prepared for critism, be it positive or negative
15:10:17 Buono> i think it's really easy for an actor or director to just lash out at someone who criticizes their film, even though sometimes that criticism is warranted
15:10:25 Genxloser> thats true. but i just dont like critics
15:11:12 feral_cat> *BLEEP*
15:11:13 Inglorious_Bastard> Weird
15:11:26 Genxloser> a dude spends a year in his work and then a critic spits on it in 10 seconds
15:11:30 Genxloser> sickens me
15:11:43 Inglorious_Bastard> I don't like them censorship boards... They're scum.
15:12:04 Buono> but look at it on the flip side- alot of critics praise films that do truly deserve it
15:12:06 Genxloser> but enough about that i digress. heh
15:12:19 feral_cat> I like critics and have no time for wineing ""artists"" that can't take it! but thats just me
15:12:33 Genxloser> eh i dont like critics good or bad. i just think they shouldnt exist
