Guy Maddin and KEYHOLE prelude in Toronto

Attention local Torontonians. Those interested in Guy Maddin's next feature project can get a prelude peak at the upcoming Toronto International Art Fair, taking place from October 2-6. In collaboration with local artist Paul Butler, there is a series of collage art on display (and sale) at the fair which is in direct connection to Maddin's next feature film project entitled Keyhole. Based on Butler’s famous Collage Party-an experimental nomadic studio functioning as an incubator for the development of ideas-the Keyhole Experiment emerged as six Winnipeg artists joined Maddin and Butler in a series of collective studio engagements with scissors and glue. With direction and the bud of a film script from Maddin, over 100 collages were produced.

Like the Winnipeg auteur's films, this series of collages has been described as 'Very odd, lush, and full of mystery.' Nice. Keyhole, being co-created also with poet John Ashbery, was inspired by Raymond Roussel's New Impressions of Africa and the film will be about the different ways people choose to view things. "I think of it as being a choose your own adventure," Maddin says. "Kind of a movie labyrinth."
