AFM 2013: Lynch, Harron, Kusama, The Soska Sisters And Vukovic Together For All Female Horror Anthology XX
MPI Dark Sky Films and XYZ Films announced today a new joint venture, a horror anthology titled XX. What makes this particular anthology stand out from the rest of the crowd, for now, is that all the segments will be directed by female directors and will cast female leads.
The lineup of directors will be Americans Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena and Chained) and Karyn Kusama (Girlfight and Jennifer's Body). And making sure there is ample CanCon in this anthology we have Canadian directors Mary Harron (American Psycho and I Shot Andy Warhol), the Soska Sisters, Jen and Sylvia Soska (Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary), and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird and The Guest).
And because we Canadians believe in Free Trade all the segments will be tied together by animated sequences developed by stop-animator Sofia Carrillo from Guadalajara, Mexico, who will also create the title sequence. I've included a sample of her work below.

Any horror anthology would be lucky to have any of these ladies' works in their lineup. To have all of them together on the same project should be a real treat.

The filmmakers will develop their own stories, and each will have a female lead character. But whether it's anthologies or full-length features, female directors - and horror from a female viewpoint in general - have been notably absent. The Dark Sky/XYZ project aims to change that.In January 2013, a study was released in conjunction with the Sundance Film Festival that posted some disheartening numbers. One, women only made up 4.4% of directors found within the top 100 box-office movies each year from 2002 through 2012, and, two, only 29.8% of the films screened at Sundance during those 10 years were made by women (including directors, writers, editors, producers, and cinematographers). Greg Newman will serve as Executive Producer for MPI/Dark Sky, while Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian will serve as Executive Producers for XYZ. Jovanka Vukovic will act as Associate Producer. Malik Ali, Badie Ali and Hamza Ali will also serve as Executive Producers on behalf of MPI/Dark Sky.
