MONSTERS INC 2 To Be A Prequel

I have a soft spot for Pixar's Monsters Inc. Back in the days when The Boy was just barely talking there was an enormous billboard for the thing right around the corner from our house and there was just something about the designs that he went nuts for. And so it was one of the very first movies that was bought for him and we went through months basically alternating between this and My Neighbor Totoro. That I have watched both as many times as I have and still love both says something about the quality of the work.

Which makes this bit of news particularly interesting:

According to materials distributed by Disney to French theaters the upcoming Monsters Inc 2 will actually be a prequel. Set in the days when Mike and Sulley are students at the University of Fear the basic plot will take them through early days as rivals until they become close friends and partners.

Personally I think this is a good choice. While turning the monsters funny was a good conclusion to the original film the idea that monsters needed to scare little kids to keep their own society going was 100% the hook that made the original film work and watching them do so was great fun.
