First Images for David Fincher produced THE GOON

Two images for the CG animated film The Goon is available exclusively on AICN. Its adapted from Eric Powell's comic series and produced by David Fincher and Blur Studios, the same team that will also bring Heavy Metal to the big screen. The Dark Horse comic is described as "a hilarious blend of pulpy horror and slapstick comedy following the ongoing misadventures of the man they call the Goon and his spastic sidekick Franky as they battle the legions of the undead!". At the Cgtalk forum, Tim Miller - the creative director of Blur Studio - chimes in on the status of the film:

The film is in early development- it has NOT been set up at a studio and isn't in production. Eric Powell is working on the script and we're doing visual development. It was our choice to get the film planned out before we try and get a studio involved. "Early Development" means concept art, some CG animation tests and the script. And Fincher is a producer--as is blur and Darkhorse-- not directing.

...Blur has never said ANYWHERE or at ANYTIME that we are "making a movie" We avoid hype and ALWAYS speak the truth. There's a HUGE difference between an announcement that a film is being developed and the film ACTUALLY BEING MADE. And we are careful about the distinction. And to be extra-clear...we're not even putting out these (or any other) press releases....it's just media reporting. This went up because Eric was having a big 10th aniversary party and Darkhorse thought it'd be nice to give fans of the comic some eyecandy. I will say though that development is coming along GREAT and I think the Goon will make an awesome film should we be lucky enough to get a chance to make it.

Not too familiar with the source material myself but I always did enjoy the animation that Blur has produced before and they manage to capture the design faithfully to the comic style. Judging from the high quality of work by the studio, its not hard to imagine they can make the jump into feature films with the big leagues and I believe this property would compliment very well to David Fincher's dark-oriented reputation. All signs point to a film worth getting the greenlit methinks. More details until further notice.
