DVD Review: Mototsugu Watanabe's SEXY BATTLE GIRLS
Mototsugu Watanabe's Sexy Battle Girls (Nerawareta gakuen: seifuku o osou) is best described as a pinku version of a tokusatsu television show. Instead of Power Rangers fighting space monsters, however, Sexy Battle Girls portrays unchaste school girls out for revenge. Pink Eiga's new DVD of the title represents the first time Sexy Battle Girls has been available with English subtitles.
Mirai (Kyoko Hashimoto) has a problem. Like many young girls, she longs to fall in love. Unfortunately for Mirai, she was trained by her father (who harbors a secret grudge) to turn her nether regions into a deadly weapon. She wears a gizmo-ridden chastity belt to keep her from straying but the belt seems to find its way to the ground quite often. As part of her father’s nebulous revenge scheme, Mirai is transferred to a private school. This is a special school as all the students seem about 15 years too old to be in high school. Soon after arriving at her new school, Mirai makes some friends. She also makes some enemies because she quickly is attacked with a deadly barrage of ball point pens. As the plot unfolds, the reasons behind Mirai's transfer and the true nature of her father's scheme is revealed. To fight the forces of evil, Mirai adds a kendama (a japanese yo-yo toy) to her already potent arsenal.
Sexy Battle Girls is a parody of the first three episodes of the Sukeban Deka television show. Needless to say, the idea of murderous Kegel muscles is a new element of the Sukeban Deka mythology. Since this is a pink film, sex scenes pop up every ten minutes. The limited $30,000 pinku budget is very evident: the sets and effects (the chastity belt is a bunch of springs and buttons strapped to a plastic crotch cup) are completely cheap. Of course, just as one does not watch Kamen Rider for state of the art effects, no one should expect this film to look like it was made by TInto Brass. Sexy Battle Girls is goofy and trashy fun that breezes by in a short 60 minutes.
