Will Secret Sunshine (밀양) compete for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2008 Academy Awards? It's quite possible, given response to the film at Cannes (though the picture attracted only 1.6 million viewers in Korea) and the accolades heaped on lead actress Jeon Do-yeon. Lee Chang-dong's drama is one of just three films applying to the Korean Film Council by the August 23rd deadline in order to be considered for Korea's Academy submission -- the two other contenders being Kim Ji-hoon's May 18 (화려한 휴가), the star-studded melodrama about the Kwangju Massacre (currently #2 at the box office), and Kim Ki-duk's low-budget (US $265,000) prison drama Breath (숨). Last year's entry was Lee Joon-ik's hugely successful historical fusion drama The King and the Clown (왕의 남자).
