[Korean Film News] "Cheaters" [내 여자의 남자친구] (2007)

Cheaters (aka "My Girl's Boy"), the debut feature film by director Park Sung-beom, opened with little fanfare in local theatres on March 22nd. The provocatively titled film whose posters feature a frolicking threesome, follows in the footsteps of other sexually charged pictures like Sex is Zero, Wet Dreams and Hot For Teacher. Seok-ho (Choi Won-yeong), a self-styled playboy with a beautiful wife, is fooling around with Ji-yeon (Ko Da-mi), a voluptuous photographer, but pines for Chae-young (Kim Poo-reun), a college student who appears to be the most virtuous girl in all of Korea. But it turns out that Chae-young, who frustrates her suitor at every turn, is not so chaste after all. The plot thickens as Seok-ho's best friend Young-su (Ko Hye-seong), outwardly awkward and shy, sets his sights on Ji-yeon, not realizing that she is already involved with his best buddy. The film's intricately woven plot, with its repetitive and overlapping scenes, (and punctuated by a heavy dose of graphic sex), is not always easy to follow, but falls neatly into place with a fresh spin on the Bible's commandment about adultery. Park, who hails from the advertising industry, previously worked as assistant director on The Happy Funeral Director and I Wish I had a Wife (starring Jeon Do-yeon, tying the knot this month). The R3 DVD is scheduled for release on May 30th.
