DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS with Tsui Hark
Last Saturday night, I attended a screening of Tsui Hark's controversial 1980 shocker DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS - FIRST KIND in a cobbled together Director's Cut that marked the first time the film had ever been screened publicly in its entirety in Hong Kong. It had been publicised that Tsui Hark would be there in person to introduce the film, so there was a noticable wave of disappointment through the sell-out audience as the lights dimmed and the director had failed to materialise. (It later transpired he was at dinner with, among others, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To - and let's face it, who would want to leave that party?)

However all was not lost! As the film ended and the lights came up on a rather shell shocked crowd, the Broadway Cinematheque's Director of Programming Gary Mak grabbed a microphone and promptly introduced Tsui Hark, who appeared from the back of the cinema. I fumbled for my phone and hit record. What followed was over an hour of insightful, informative and damn entertaining Q&A between the director and the audience. I managed to capture the whole thing which I present to you below for your viewing pleasure.

Please excuse my less than perfect vantage point as nobody was expecting this event to occur at all, and over the course of the hour my arm did get a little tired from time to time so it does shake a little. But it's the audio that is important and that has come through pretty damn clear. The majority of the talk is predominantly in Cantonese, but Gary Mak offers fine interpretation throughout and when asked questions in English (yup, that's me asking the first one!) Tsui slips effortlessly into rather impressive English. There is a brief edit at around the 47 minute mark when my phone deemed the video too long and insisted I stopped it and started again, but the information lost during those few seconds is negligible.

And with that, may I present Mr. Tsui Hark:
