Short Film, Short Review: ANIMAL CONTROL
Shot in a dry, naturalistic style that makes it all the much more unsettling, Kire Paputts' Animal Control is the story of Larry, animal control officer and amateur taxidermist. A solitary soul, Larry's dingy apartment is populated entirely with his creations - a chorus of silent friends reclaimed as corpses from the side of the road and given their rigid immortality on a table in Larry's living room. But things change for Larry when he picks up a dog that is not quite as dead as he had thought ...

A sort of silent, desperate love story, Animal Control is a thoroughly unusual piece of work. The squeamish will certainly be left squirming at the taxidermy sequences but the relationship that springs up between Larry and the one animal in his life that isn't reduced to just meat and hide provides a surprisingly touching core.

Animal Control screens at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of Short Cuts Canada Program 6 on September 15th and 17th.
