FNC 2009: LES BEAUX GOSSES Review

Ah! the tender years of high school: hanging out where your best buddies while hoping you'll finally find a girl who'll take away your virginity and calm all your flaming testosterone for good. Boy did it sucked !

Described by many as the Belgian Superbad, Riad Sattouf's Les Beaux Gosses is easily the best teen comedy of the year. With its realistic approach to the genre, the result is a very funny comedy that also shows adolescence with a veracity we rarely see on the screen. 

Hervé and Camel are two buddies obsessively looking for sex, which seems impossible when you're part of the school's outcast gang. We follow them through their daily routine as they try hard to see their hopes finally coming true. 

Talk about a real treat ! As mentionned earlier, Les Beaux Gosses is an achievement because it brings the true spirit of high school to life. Director Riad Sattouf's casting are actors the age of their characters who look like normal kids with acne and neglicted hair cut. They all have strong and charismatic personalities and the relationship they have is real. The film's best moments are when they're just by themselves talking (read lying) about their exploits with the opposite sex. 

Yes it is a comedy with a few gross but funny toilet jokes, but what strikes the most is the authenticity Sattouf managed to capture. You'll find yourself leaving the theater with a huge smile on your face feeling nostalgic about more innocent times. And if you're in high school right now, you just might recognized yourself in Hervé and Camel.
