Magnet and XYZ Partner To Unleash The Evil Of XX On The World
What's better than badass women making badass horror films? Are you ready for a new point of view?
Magnet and XYZ Films are going to blast the doors off of the anthology horror vehicle with XX! Magnet is fully financing and has acquired worldwide rights to this collection of short films that is sure to challenge, scare, and inspire viewers.
Contributors to the film are all female directors --- who will showcase female leads --- meaning that the world will get to see new work by Mary Harron (American Psycho), Jennifer Lynch (Surveillance), Jovanka Vuckovic (The Guest), and Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body). No casting news yet.
Judging from these ladies' past filmographies, I'm grateful that they'll have another terrifying outlet. Magnet, the tentacled genre arm of Magnolia, has extended the horror olive branch to these women, just as they have to mostly men via the ABCs of Death and VHS franchises.
I'm thrilled that these directors will get a lengthy short film to exercise their creative powers, but being female myself, I can't help but wonder if their films will all have to be five times as good as the aforementioned, roughly 98% male films to be considered a "decent investment." That said, this is utterly fantastic and I'm hopeful that this anthology smashes the glass movie ceiling.
No release date is set but production will be completed in 2015. Who's excited?!
(Full disclosure: XYZ Films is an LA-based film production and sales company founded in 2008 by Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian, with partner Todd Brown joining the company in 2009. Further disclosure, I think that XYZ and Todd are fucking awesome, and no, I was not paid to state that.)
