Full Trailer for Hur Jin-Ho's 호우시절 (The Season of Good Rain)

Mmmh... what to think. On one hand, Jung Woo-Sung and Gao Yuanyuan's English acting is a bit salty. Then again, 1) it's not likely to be ALL spoken in English, with some parts in Korean and others in Mandarin, 2) the English is not really supposed to be good, is it? It's clearly a second language for both characters, and the awkwardness of it all sort of adds to the atmosphere (it's understandable enough, so that'll work. Not that Chinese and Korean viewers would have to worry, since it'll be subtitled), and 3) dialogue is simple, which is something many non-English speaking directors using English seem to always misunderstand. If you have difficulties pronouncing basic words, it's not too likely you'll lose yourself in existential tirades drenched in highbrow lingo - 러브토크 (Love Talk) docet. Last but not least, supporting cast seems solid, with Lee Joon-Ik regular Kim Sang-Ho and Chinese historical drama mainstay Ma Shaohua amongst the names.

I don't know whether it's the atmosphere and Hur's touch translating well despite the shortness of the clip, or just mere confidence that he will make something good out of this, but 호우시절 (The Season of Good Rain) looks like a potential dark horse of this season. Considering how wretched most of the melodramas released this year have been, it surely wouldn't hurt. Film releases on October 8.
